RIYADH — The Green Riyadh Program has proudly unveiled the completion of the environmental rehabilitation of Ghudhwana, a significant tributary of Wadi Hanifa, after 34 months of dedicated work. This initiative has involved the planting of over 15,000 trees and shrubs, creating a beautiful natural haven that stretches across 5.2 kilometers, connecting the neighborhoods of Dhahrat Al Badi'ah, Al-Suwaidi, and Al-Zahra in southwest Riyadh. The rehabilitation effort aims to enhance the lives and livelihoods of local communities, offering expansive recreational and entertainment spaces. Sustainable environmental practices guided the project, which included extensive cleaning operations, waste removal, and the restoration of flood control channels to mitigate flooding risks. Additionally, channels for permanent water flow were established to prevent swamp formation within the Wadi. The program prioritized the planting of locally sourced trees and shrubs selected for their ability to thrive in the Wadi environment, ensuring sustainability. Efficient use of recycled irrigation water has been emphasized, tailored to meet the needs of the newly planted trees. This approach seeks to boost afforestation rates in the city, contributing to lower temperatures and providing a natural refuge for residents and visitors. To enhance community engagement, the project includes over 65,000 square meters of seating areas, 13 children’s play areas, and various sports facilities, alongside more than 700 parking spaces. Shaded pathways extending 22 kilometers have also been constructed to encourage residents to walk, promoting health and well-being. Water channels were designed for continuous flow and natural drainage, complemented by the construction of nine bridges to facilitate movement between neighborhoods. The Green Riyadh Program aims to rehabilitate and afforest valleys covering 148 square kilometers, adhering to the highest urban design and sustainability standards. This initiative focuses on increasing green spaces to meet the needs of a growing population, with plans to create parks, green main roads and public squares, and allocate green areas in government and public buildings. — SG
