October 26, 2024

JAKARTA — Newly inaugurated Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto kicked off his first Cabinet meeting on Friday, urging the 109 members to collaborate as a cohesive "team."

Dressed in military combat uniform, Prabowo led his “Red and White Cabinet” at the Magelang Military Academy in Central Java.

Having taken office last weekend after winning the February presidential election, Prabowo, 73, succeeds Joko Widodo, who completed two five-year terms on October 20. His Cabinet is the largest since 1966, comprising ministers, deputy ministers, and agency heads.

At the academy, Cabinet members are set to outline the administration’s future policies, including the free meals for children initiative that was a key part of Prabowo's campaign. To ensure the meeting runs smoothly, over 4,100 combat personnel have been deployed around the venue.

Prabowo emphasized the importance of synchrony among Cabinet members, stating, "The government must not work in silos, but they should work as a team." He highlighted that the "Red and White Cabinet" must recognize that they are competing with other countries.

During this three-day retreat, which concludes on Sunday, Prabowo is expected to focus on implementing anti-corruption measures as part of his administration's agenda. The meeting marks a significant step in shaping the future direction of Southeast Asia's largest economy. — Agencies
