RIYADH — Mayor of Riyadh Prince Dr. Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf emphasized the vital role cities play in addressing environmental challenges. "Cities are not merely centers of challenges, but also platforms for launching innovative and sustainable solutions," he said while addressing the opening session of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Riyadh. The global event gathered together leaders and experts from all over the world for the event that will run until December 13 to accelerate international efforts in tackling drought challenges and to adopt a proactive approach to this global crisis.

The mayor highlighted the contributions of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman in establishing Riyadh as a leader in sustainable urban development. "The Green Riyadh Project stands out as a flagship initiative, which aims to plant 7.5 million trees to improve air quality, reduce temperatures, and enhance biodiversity. Other major environmental projects include the rehabilitation of the 4,000-square-kilomter area of Wadi Hanifa, transforming it into a model of ecological restoration and a unique environmental and tourism destination," he said while referring to the establishment of over 100 major parks, such as King Salman Park and King Abdullah Park, which improve citizens' and residents' quality of life and provide natural spaces that promote well-being.

On sustainability efforts, Prince Faisal spoke about initiatives that support afforestation through establishing new nurseries and adopting sustainable urban planning methodologies, such as transit-oriented development, integrated with the Riyadh Metro network. These endeavors seek to reduce carbon emissions and achieve harmony between public transportation and urban spaces.

He further outlined Riyadh’s environmental strategy, which includes more than 68 initiatives across energy, water, waste management, biodiversity, and natural aspects, pointing out that these initiatives reflect Saudi Arabia’s ambitious vision for sustainable development, serving as a global model for others to follow.

The mayor called for enhanced international cooperation to address global environmental challenges, underscoring the significance of COP16 as an effective platform for uniting efforts, sharing knowledge, and fostering innovation to reach a sustainable future for coming generations across the world.
