Saudi Gazette Report

RIYADH Tariq Aba Al-Khail, spokesman of the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS), revealed that remains of marine organisms dating back to the early Eocene era were discovered in layers of limestone rocks in the Ras Al-Ru'us sedimentary formation in the Northern Borders region of Saudi Arabia. These vertebrate fossils, which include bony fish, are the first of their kind in Saudi Arabia for this geological period.

The new finds include imprints and internal molds of bony fish species. These fossils were attributed to extinct catfish (silurians) of great importance in understanding the environment of the the Early Eocene marine communities in the Tethyan Sea from a geographic and paleo environmental perspective.
