LOS ANGELES — A passenger was taken into custody on Sunday after allegedly attempting to divert a Mexican domestic flight to the US, according to the Volaris airline and Mexican authorities. An investigation is currently underway.

After departing from El Bajio en route to Tijuana, the passenger tried to forcibly redirect the aircraft, prompting an emergency landing at Guadalajara Airport, where he was detained, the airline said in a news release. The crew followed established security procedures and protocols to take the passenger into custody.

The National Guard was notified, the Federal Civil Aviation Agency reported, though their specific role remains unclear. CNN reached out to Mexico’s federal Department of Security and Volaris for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

All passengers and crew members were safe, according to Volaris. The airline said it regrets the inconvenience and that the safety of its passengers and crew remains a top priority.
