Saudi Gazette report

JEDDAH —
Al Ittihad Club striker and French international Karim Benzema, 36, is reportedly contemplating retirement from football at the end of the current season, according to Spanish outlet Relevo.

Sources close to the matter indicate that Benzema has not yet made a final decision but is seriously considering retiring due to fatigue from his daily routine.

Relevo noted, “As players near the end of their careers, the daily grind becomes more challenging. Beyond the 90 minutes on the pitch, the mental and physical demands of football often take their toll.”

The report also highlighted that Benzema’s challenging start with Al Ittihad has contributed to his mental exhaustion.

However, the same sources emphasized that Benzema remains fully committed to the club’s project.

Currently, he is the team's top scorer with 10 goals in 11 matches and is tied for second place in the league’s scoring chart alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, trailing Aleksandar Mitrović by just two goals.

While enjoying a strong season, Benzema is reportedly considering his long-term future.

The Spanish outlet claims that the player has internally opened the door to potentially ending his career soon.

Relevo further speculated that Benzema might extend his career until 2026, when his current contract expires, rather than retiring in 2025.

However, Al Ittihad management views a potential 2025 retirement positively, as it would free up approximately €100 million in salary obligations while allowing the player to maintain a lighter, ambassadorial role tied to the club and league.

Post-retirement, Benzema is expected to serve as a global ambassador for Real Madrid, particularly in the Arab region.

The club is actively targeting the Middle Eastern market, which it views as a hub of untapped opportunities.

Real Madrid’s commercial team has been closely monitoring the region, securing sponsorships with entities like the Saudi Investment Bank and Fly Emirates during their recent visit to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup.
