KUWAIT CITY — The Khaleeji Zain 26 (Arabian Gulf Cup) kicked off in style on Saturday, featuring two tightly contested draws and a captivating Opening Ceremony that celebrated the spirit of the Gulf region.

In Group A’s first match, Kuwait thrilled home fans by taking the lead against Oman through Yousef Nasser’s towering header in the 34th minute.

However, Oman equalized just before halftime when Issam Al Sabhi slid home a cross in the 42nd minute, ending the match in a 1-1 draw at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium.

The second match, played at Jaber Al-Mubarak International Stadium, saw Qatar take an early lead against the UAE with Akram Afif converting a penalty in the 17th minute.

The UAE fought back in first-half injury time, with Yahya Al Ghassani’s expertly finished goal ensuring another 1-1 stalemate.

All four teams in Group A now stand on one point each heading into Tuesday’s second-round fixtures.

Before the matches, the tournament launched with a spectacular Opening Ceremony at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium.

Themed “The Future is Gulf,” the event dazzled a crowd of 42,445 and millions of television viewers with breathtaking music, choreography, special effects, fireworks, and a jaw-dropping drone display celebrating Gulf unity and culture.

Looking ahead, Group B matches begin Sunday, with Saudi Arabia facing Bahrain and reigning champions Iraq taking on Yemen.
