KUWAIT CITY — Qatar’s head coach Luis Garcia has hinted at further surprises in his lineup as his team prepares for their crucial second match against Oman in the Khaleeji Zain 26 (Arabian Gulf Cup) on Tuesday.

Garcia, who surprised fans by including and starting star player Akram Afif in their opening 1-1 draw with the UAE despite earlier suggestions he wouldn’t play, said more changes could be expected.

Afif rewarded the decision by scoring Qatar’s goal from the penalty spot.

“Akram is always ready to help the national team,” Garcia said at the pre-match press conference on Monday at the Crowne Plaza.

“We’ll see what happens. There will be new players on the pitch.”

Garcia emphasized the importance of integrating new players into the squad, highlighting their role in ensuring a brighter future for Qatar’s national team.

He also noted the importance of building team confidence after the 1-1 draw, which came on the heels of a 5-0 loss to the UAE in World Cup qualifiers last month.

“Every game is different, but we focus on our team. We aim for victory and try to improve with every match,” Garcia said.

“The last game was tough after our earlier loss to the UAE, but the team spirit is very good. We are working hard to solve our mistakes and play calmer and better football.”

Looking ahead to the clash with Oman, Garcia praised the Omani team’s dynamism and speed, acknowledging the challenge they pose.

“Oman is a very tough opponent. They are fast and dynamic, so we need to be balanced in our transitions and attack with care,” he said.

“We can promise hard work from the players. Results aren’t guaranteed in football, but we are ready to give our best and play good football, which is something I love.”

Qatar will aim for their first win in Group A to strengthen their chances of progressing to the semifinals, as both teams look to break the four-way tie at the top of the group standings. — SG
