KUWAIT CITY — Kuwait head coach Juan Pizzi has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to upset tournament favorites UAE in their crucial Group A match of the Khaleeji Zain 26 (Arabian Gulf Cup) at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Kuwait, who drew 1-1 with Oman in their opening match, face an in-form UAE side that also started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Qatar.
The high-stakes encounter is expected to play a decisive role in determining which teams advance to the semifinals from Group A.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Monday, Pizzi emphasized his team’s commitment to deliver a strong performance.
“I won’t be making any promises that we will win over the UAE, but we will be trying our best to seek it,” Pizzi said.
“Saturday showed just how much the crowd is behind us, and we really appreciated their support. We have a squad of 26 players, including those who are injured, but I have an idea who will be participating in this match.”
Pizzi was accompanied by striker Moaz Al-Anzi, who underlined the importance of fan support in the team’s quest for success.
“The fans are right behind us and want us to win the title because we are the owners of the cup with 10 victories in the past. We will do our best to make them proud,” Al-Anzi said.
Kuwait took the lead in their opening match against Oman with a Yousef Nasser header, only to see their advantage slip away before halftime.
Despite the draw, Pizzi remains optimistic about Kuwait’s chances and believes his team can rise to the occasion against the UAE.
With all four Group A teams tied on one point, Tuesday’s match is pivotal for both sides as they aim to secure a spot in the semifinals.
