Georgia to deport 25 foreign nationals arrested during anti-government protests

TBILISI, Georgia — The Georgian government announced Saturday plans to deport 25 foreign nationals arrested during ongoing protests that erupted on Nov. 28, 2024, following the suspension of the country’s EU membership negotiations.

According to a statement by the Georgian Interior Ministry, the detainees, who hail from various countries, were taken into custody by police during the demonstrations and issued administrative fines by the court.

The ministry confirmed that 10 of the 25 individuals have already left the country.

The protests, now in their 38th day, were sparked by the government’s decision to suspend EU membership talks for four years.

Demonstrators have shown no signs of slowing down, continuing to demand transparency and a reversal of the decision.

The Interior Ministry did not disclose the nationalities of the foreign detainees but emphasized that all legal procedures were followed in their apprehension and subsequent deportation orders. — Agencies
