NEW YORK — Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Al-Khuraiji participated in a high-level meeting UN Security Council meeting titled “Practicing Multilateralism Governance, Reforming and Improving Global Governance" here on Tuesday.
Al-Khuraiji delivered a speech in which he stressed the need to move toward enhancing the ability of the international system to maintain peace and security in accordance with what is stipulated in the United Nations Charter.
"The increasing challenges facing the international community and current events require the utmost effectiveness in dealing with and responding to the multilateral system, led by the Security Council, which focuses on interacting neutrally and objectively with all issues in accordance with the mandate entrusted to it," he said,
"Saudi Arabia stresses the need to combine the factor of effectiveness on the one hand, and the factor of pluralism and sound representation on the other hand, in any serious effort to reform and complete global governance," Al-Khuraiji Said.
He reiterated Saudi Arabia's emphasis on the importance of intergovernmental negotiations on reforming the multilateral system, noting that they should be through the General Assembly, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 62/557, which was adopted by consensus.
Al-Khuraiji pointed to the growing crisis of confidence in the ability of the United Nations and its bodies, especially the Security Council, to carry out their responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security and resolving disputes through peaceful means.
He renewed Saudi Arabia's call to reform the Security Council to be more just in representing the current reality, more effective in keeping pace with the transformations and developments of the international community, and more efficient in addressing its common challenges. He said: "The Kingdom is ready to cooperate with the rest of the member states in order to achieve this noble goal."
