TEL AVIV — At least one person was killed and four other people were wounded in a stabbing attack Monday in the northern Israeli city of Haifa. Israeli authorities said the assailant was killed.

One teenager and two people aged around 30 suffered serious injuries in the attack, while a person in her 70s was said to be in moderate condition, according to the domestic press, citing Israeli authorities.

The teenager, said to be 15, has undergone surgery and is now stable.

The stabbing, which the police are treating as a militant attack, took place in a bus station. A security guard and a civilian neutralized the attacker, whose identity was not immediately known.

“The identity of the eliminated terrorist is not yet clear. We are scanning the area in order to rule out the presence of additional assailants,” Israel Police chief Daniel Levy said in a statement on Monday.

In the meantime, the police released information that the attacker was an Israeli citizen of Arab background who returned to the country after spending some time abroad.
