MOSCOW — Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused the European Union of engaging in “dangerous geopolitical games” following its decision to accelerate military support for Ukraine.
In a statement on Friday, Zakharova criticized the discussions and outcomes of an extraordinary EU summit on Ukraine and defense, claiming that Brussels is ignoring the real consequences of its decisions.
She argued that the EU, initially established as a trade and economic integration project, is now rapidly evolving into a military alliance with the aim of delivering a "strategic defeat" to Russia.
Zakharova asserted that instead of pursuing peaceful solutions, the EU has prioritized increasing military and financial aid to Kyiv, which she claimed is escalating tensions and diminishing the chances of diplomatic resolution.
She further alleged that the EU’s rapid militarization and rearmament have been formally declared, warning that future generations of Europeans will bear the burden of these policies under the pretense of countering a Russian threat.
She also suggested that the EU’s military ambitions are constrained by its lack of legal and operational capabilities, making its strategic autonomy merely an extension of NATO.
Zakharova's remarks underscore ongoing tensions between Russia and the EU as the conflict in Ukraine continues, with both sides hardening their positions amid escalating military commitments. — Agencies
