RIYADH— The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia announced that Thursday, June 26, will be the first day of the month of Muharram, marking the beginning of the new Hijri year 1447. The announcement follows sighting of the crescent moon of Muharram on Dhul Hijjah 29, Wednesday evening, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

A meeting of the Crescent Sighting Department of the Supreme Court took this decision after verifying testimonies of people about the sighting of the crescent moon, the Supreme Court said in a statement. The fasting of Ashura on Muharram 10 will be on Saturday, July 5.

The Supreme Court prayed to God to grant success to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman and give them best reward as well as to enable Muslims to achieve unity among them during the new Hijri year.
