CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge police said Monday that a 21-year-old man has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place over the fatal stabbing of Saudi student Mohammed Yousef Al-Qasim, 20, in what officers described as an “unprovoked attack.”

The suspect, from Cambridge, is set to appear before Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 4. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Tuesday.

A second man, aged 50 and also from Cambridge, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains in custody, police said.

According to authorities, Al-Qasim was taking part in a 10-week training program in Cambridge and studying English at EF International Language Campuses.

Police said they were called to Mill Park at 11:27 p.m. on Friday, August 1, following reports of violence.

Despite paramedics’ efforts, Al-Qasim was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:01 a.m. on August 2.

Preliminary information indicates that the attack happened after one of the suspects started a confrontation with Al-Qasim near Mill Park, around a 10-minute walk from his residence, before stabbing him with a knife.

Two suspects have been arrested, while a third remains at large. — SG
