Last Thursday, Twitter succumbed to a cascading bug. According to a post on the company’s blog by Mazen Rawashdeh, VP, Engineering, the bug created an effect that wasn’t confined to a particular software element and cascaded into other elements as well. This impacted users worldwide. A rollback to a previous stable version of Twitter restored service. Rawashdeh squashed speculation that a hack or heavy traffic from Euro 2012 had caused the outage. Another blog post revealed how during sporting events, “Twitter mirrors the roar of the crowd.” A visualization showed the support for #France (in blue) and #England (in red) during their #Euro2012 match on June 11. On that day, people tweeted from 160 different countries about the game.
