With regard to the article “‘Misyar’ marriage... for the cowardly” (Mar. 7), a Muslim man is allowed by Shariah to have a maximum of four wives at a time. It is because of the influence of the Western non-Muslim world that some Muslim wives no longer accept sharing their husbands with another wife, which is actually un-Islamic in that the wife has become a hindrance to the Shariah rights of her husband. This may as a consequence force him to become involved in a ‘misyar’ marriage. ‘Misyar’ marriages are completely un-Islamic since Islam guarantees the rights of a woman as a wife, be it be the first wife or the second.

Whenever we act outside of Islam, we are bound to end up hurt. One of the basic requirements of Islam is that marriage be announced in public with four witnesses and a dowry given to the wife. When you violate this, how can you expect Allah’s blessing? Stop misusing Islam for your personal pleasure! “Misyar” has given a bad name to Islam. Whoever considered it Islamic in the first place?

“Misyar” is nothing more than a hypocritical way of justifying immoral and indecent behavior through religion.
