MANILA — Dolphy, or Rodolfo Vera Quizon Sr. in real life, has passed away. He was 83.

News of his death first broke on Twitter as several stars — including Ruffa Gutierrez, Vice Ganda, and Jim Paredes — offered their condolences. There was initial confusion as some others in the industry refuted the news, citing “reliable sources.” It was, however, confirmed shortly after by Dolphy’s longtime partner Zsa Zsa Padilla on television.

The Filipino Comedy King had been admitted to the Makati Medical Center on June 9 because of pneumonia. His family said his condition was improving as the Philippine nation continued to wish for his complete recovery.

With a career spanning 66 years, Dolphy was best known as John Puruntong of the hit comedy series “John en Marsha” and as Kevin Cosme of the popular 90s sitcom “Home Along da Riles.” He also starred in over 200 films that were a hit in the box office.

He would have turned 84 on July 25. — SG
