JEDDAH — Late for Futoor? In a hurry to whisk up something tasty for the kids? Even when you are running out of all the fancy indgredients at home, here are a few recipes you can never go wrong with. And the best part- the kids love it!
In case you are bored with the regular club sandwich or mom's stacked tuna sandwiches in your fridge, make something new and authentic. You can use bread as the core and believe us, it is the best base for a healthy meal. Replace white with brown bread for French toast. And try a household name that millions of expatriates living in the country,enjoy during Ramadan, "bread pakoda." We even have something easy for tea and light snacks at home. Just pop it into the oven and it's done.
French Toast
Ingredients
4 eggs
1/4 cup milk
6-8 slices of bread
4 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
In a bowl, mix everything except the bread. Cut the slices into half and in a frying pan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk together the mixture in a low plate, you can add whipped cream (1/2 cup) if you want and dip bread in the mixture. Fry slices until golden brown and serve with nutella, maple or chocolate syrup. You can even serve it with fresh fruits like berries and bananas.
Bread Pakoda
Indgredients
Besan/ flour 1/2 cup
Bread 4 slices
Garam masala powder
Crushed zeera 1 tsp
Baking bowder or cooking soda 1/4 teaspoon
Salt and red chili powder to taste
Directions
In a bowl, mx all the contents and add around 1/2 cup of water and mix- make sure the texture isn't too thick or too thin. Add a few drops of oil and then dip the (half-cut) slices into the batter and deep-fry in hot oil. Fry until golden medium brown. Serve with green chutney, ketchup and preferrably enjoy it with hot tea.
Banana Bread
Indgredients
3 bananas
1 and a 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup melted butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup grated walnuts (optional)
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), and butter the baking dish. In a bowl, beat the bananas, (you can add butter to soften it) add eggs, walnuts (optional), vanilla powder and baking soda to the flour. Pour on to the pan and let it bake for an hour at the same temperature. You can serve it with chocolate or whipped cream.
