Aug. 14 is commemorated as the day when Pakistan achieved independence. In Urdu language it is called as “Yom-e-Istiqlal”. On Aug. 14, 1947 the world saw “Islamic Republic of Pakistan” emerge as a sovereign country. In the Islamic calendar, the day of independence coincided with 27 Ramadan, the eve of which is regarded as sacred by the Muslims.

The word “Pakistan” is combination of two words “Pak”, which means pious, and “stan”, which means homeland. So “Pakistan” means land of pious people.

Aug, 14 is a day of great importance in the history of Pakistan. In paying tribute to the achievements of our leaders and people, and to celebrate the independence of Pakistan, the day is observed every year with zest. Independence Day is celebrated with joy and pleasure to show our happiness of being independent on the map of the world.

Official and public festivities take place on this auspicious day to thank Allah for giving us a separate homeland where we can spend our lives according to teachings of Islam.

We should remember that Pakistan was not created only as a geographical entity. Rather Pakistan was to become an ideal Islamic welfare state that would showcase how the golden principles of Islam can form the basis for a modern and tolerant society, a society wherein not only Muslims but the minorities would also be guaranteed security of life and religious freedom. We should remember that Pakistan’s survival lies in selfless national solidarity.
