Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah told a number of scholars recently that laziness was a common trait among them. This is quite true. Laziness is not limited to Muslim scholars and preachers alone, but it is common among all Saudis.
I am generalizing here with no reservation. It is as if we are a lazy nation without any exceptions. It is as if laziness has become part of our nature.
A friend of mine, whom I utterly trust, recently told me that he visited a government office and found the windows closed and the office in complete darkness. He ventured in to find all three government employees on duty fast asleep. His story was not hard to believe because I know very well that we are a lazy people by nature. The examples of our laziness are plentiful; you can see them in the faltering projects on which work has stopped without any reason. We have a lot of money and good brains so there is no reason for delays in such projects except for our laziness.
When we look at the reasons for our laziness, we will discover that it is a natural habit that we inherited from our fathers and grandfathers. Knowing the reasons for our laziness makes the solution easier to find. All we need to overcome this trait is to be armed with strong determination, perseverance and training. This is exactly what Saudi Aramco has done in its work culture with great success. This is why we resort to this company in all matters, big or small. So why not, we imitate this company to get rid of our laziness.
