Customers forced to use cash as MADA network down
By Abdul Rahman Al-MisbahiOkaz/Saudi GazetteJeddah — The MADA payment services were disrupted Sunday for the second time in less than a year affecting sale and purchase operations in shops and withdrawal of money from ATMs.This disruption forced everyone to deal in cash only. Many retail stores and restaurants on Sunday declined to provide services to those who wanted to pay through their MADA cards as the network was down. The disruption of the MADA services was caused by a fire in one of the power units operating the main data center, an official source told Okaz/Saudi Gazette. He said the fire was put out and the operations resumed partially through a standby operations center. The disruption only affected shops and restaurants that require the MADA payment network, according to banking...

OPEC and Russia rule out immediate output boost
ALGIERS — OPEC and its biggest oil-producer ally outside the group, Russia, ruled out on Sunday any immediate, additional increase in crude output, effectively rebuffing US President Donald Trump’s calls for action to cool the market.OPEC and non-OPEC energy ministers gathered in Algiers for a meeting that ended with no formal recommendation for any additional supply boost.Benchmark Brent oil reached $80 a barrel this month, prompting Trump to reiterate on Thursday his demand that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries lower prices. The price rally mainly stemmed from a decline in oil exports from OPEC member Iran due to fresh US sanctions.Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih said “whatever takes place between now and the end of the year in terms of supply changes will...

Shell reducing presence in onshore Nigerian fields
BODO, Nigeria — Royal Dutch Shell wants to reweight its footprint in Nigeria to focus on oil and gas fields far offshore, away from the theft, spills, corruption and unrest that have plagued the West African country’s onshore industry for decades. But for the company that pioneered Nigeria’s oil industry in the 1950s, the Niger Delta remains as important – and problematic – as ever. While Shell has cut onshore oil production and sold some onshore assets, it continues to invest in others. In fact, onshore production has risen in recent years as a share of Shell’s output in Nigeria, an analysis of company data over the past decade shows.Much of the increase comes from less polluting gas, used mainly in power generation, which Shell thinks will be key to the transition to lower...

Signs of life as dollar ebbs and trade tensions subside
By Ole Hansen*THE Bloomberg Commodity Index, which tracks the performance of 22 major commodity futures, rose from the ashes this past week. The 2% gain occurred after some early weakness after the US announcement of additional tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports. The broad-based recovery that followed in global stocks and currencies was driven by a combination of the US tariffs coming in at the lower 10% bracket and China, while responding with its own counter tariffs, announcing plans to cut taxes, lift consumption, and lowering its average tariff rate on imports from most of its trading partners as soon as October. While these developments may have helped sentiment, a proper de-escalation in China / US relations has yet to be seen. Given this, some caution is warranted...

Sun-like stars rotate differentially, with the equator rotating faster than the higher latitudes. The blue arrows in the figure represent rotation speed. Differential rotation is thought to be an essential ingredient for generating magnetic activity and starspots.
Precise rotation pattern of sun-like stars measured for the first time
ABU DHABI — Sun-like stars rotate up to two and a half times faster at the equator than at higher latitudes, a finding by researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi that challenges current science on how stars rotate.Until now, little was known about the precise rotational patterns of Sun-like stars, only that the equator spins faster than at higher latitudes, similar to the Sun. Scientists at the NYU Abu Dhabi Center for Space Science used observations from NASA’s Kepler mission and asteroseismology — the study of sound waves traveling inside stars — to determine with precision how Sun-like stars rotate, which no other scientific method has been able to achieve.Their study found that Sun-like stars, characterized as being like the Sun in mass and age, do indeed rotate in a similar manner as...
