British inquiry intensifies Danske Bank money laundering scandal
COPENHAGEN/LONDON — Danske Bank's money laundering scandal spread on Friday to Britain where the National Crime Agency (NCA) said it is investigating the use of UK-registered companies. Concern about the extent of possible money laundering involving Danske Bank's Estonian branch is mounting and European Union Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager joined a growing chorus of calls for a clampdown on the billions of euros alleged to have been "washed" through several European banks. "This is a giga scandal," Vestager said, as Danske Bank's already battered shares fell a further 3.9 percent. Britain's NCA said it was "aware of the use of UK registered companies in this case and has related on-going operational activity", adding that the...

Facebook to drop on-site support for political campaigns
SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook Inc said on Thursday that it would no longer dispatch employees to the offices of political campaigns to offer support ahead of elections, as it did with US President Donald Trump in the 2016 race. The company and other major online ad sellers including Alphabet Inc's Google and Twitter Inc have long offered free dedicated assistance to strengthen relationships with top advertisers such as presidential campaigns. Brad Parscale, who was Trump's online ads chief in 2016, last year called onsite "embeds" from Facebook crucial to the candidate's victory. Facebook has said that Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton was offered identical help, but she accepted a different level than Trump. Google and Twitter did not immediately respond to...

Google defends Gmail data sharing, gives few details on violations
WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO — Alphabet Inc's Google gave details about its policies for third-party Gmail add-ons but stopped short of fully addressing questions from US senators about developers who break its email-scanning rules. How user data flows between big technology platforms such as Google and Facebook Inc and their partners has faced scrutiny around the world this year since Facebook revealed it had done little to monitor such relationships. Google said in a letter to US senators made public on Thursday that it relies on automated scans and reports from security researchers to monitor add-ons after launch, but did not respond to lawmakers' request to say how many have been caught violating the company's policies. Senators may seek further clarity on Gmail's...

Italy's Antitrust contests Ryanair's hand baggage charge
ROME — Italy's competition authority Antitrust has opened an inquiry into low-cost airline Ryanair's decision to charge passengers for hand luggage, a which the body described an "essential" item for travelers. From November, non-priority customers of the no-frills airline will only be allowed to take one "small personal bag", such as a handbag or laptop case, into the plane's cabin as long as it can fit under the seat in front. However they will be charged if they want to take on a 10kg holdall or suitcase. Hand luggage is "an essential element of transport" so Ryanair, and all other carriers, should include the price in the cost of a plane ticket, Antitrust said in a statement cited by the Italian press. The new Ryanair policy could amount...

Amazon aims to make Alexa assistant bigger part of users' lives
SEATTLE — From the kitchen to the car, Amazon on Thursday sought to make its Alexa digital assistant and online services a bigger part of people's lives with an array of new products and partnerships. Updates to the Internet giant's Alexa-infused Echo smart speakers will allow them to tend to microwave cooking and even have "hunches" regarding what users may want or have forgotten. When Alexa is told "corn on the cob," a digital Echo speaker starts an AmazonBasics microwave oven in a faux home demonstration room, setting the preferred time and voicing what it is doing. But when asked to add 30 seconds, Alexa paused and then started to play songs by the band "Thirty Seconds to Mars." Such misunderstandings are routine enough with smart speakers...

MONTREAL — Coca-Cola, Walmart and other big multinationals pledged on Thursday to help reduce plastic pollution in the world's oceans in support of a campaign by five of the G7 industrialized nations. Britain, Canada, France, Germany and Italy, along with the European Union, signed the Ocean Plastics Charter at a leaders' summit in Canada's Charlevoix region in June. The United States and Japan abstained but non-G7 nations Norway and Jamaica are also backing the plan to ensure 100 percent of plastics are recyclable by 2030. The nations aim to develop more viable alternatives to plastic packaging, to work towards a goal of all plastics being recycled and reused by 2040. On the second day of a G7 ministerial meeting in Canada's Atlantic port city of Halifax, Canadian...
