Fake cryptocurrency apps use new 2FA bypass technique to sidestep Google permission policy
DUBAI — ESET researchers have discovered fake cryptocurrency apps using a previously unseen technique to bypass SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA), circumventing Google’s recent SMS permissions restrictions. Google restricted the use of SMS and Call Log permissions in Android apps in March 2019 to prevent intrusive apps from abusing them for various illicit purposes. The apps, named “BTCTurk Pro Beta,” “BtcTurk Pro Beta” and “BTCTURK PRO” impersonate the Turkish cryptocurrency exchange BtcTurk and phish for login credentials to the service. Instead of intercepting SMS messages to bypass 2FA protection on users’ accounts and transactions, these malicious apps take the one-time password (OTP) from notifications appearing on the compromised device’s display. Besides...

BANGKOK — Southeast Asian leaders agreed on Sunday to work together on the region's economy and security to strengthen their position to face growing US-China tensions, as they wrapped up their summit in Bangkok. The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will need its collective economic strength for bargaining power globally, especially amid the trade tensions between the world's top two economies, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha told a news conference, as chairman of the 34th ASEAN Summit.Prayuth urged ASEAN nations to complete negotiations this year for the China-initiated Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) pact that includes 16 countries but has been held up by disputes between China and India over access to markets and protected lists...

Improved Saudi savings to have beneficial results
By Jorge Camarate and Fadi AdraIN 2018, 45% of Saudi citizens had no savings and more than 80% had no investment plans, according to a survey conducted by the Riyali Financial Literacy Program and Souqalmal.com. Meanwhile, Saudis are borrowing at very high rates. Saudi banks have outstanding consumer loans worth nearly $100 billion, excluding lending for education, healthcare, and housing.Such behavior is not surprising given that Saudi Arabia provides pension and social benefits that are generous even by GCC standards. The result is insufficient personal savings. As part of a move to a more balanced economy, in which state provision is more targeted and resource management is more efficient, Saudi Vision 2030 has set a goal of increasing savings from 6% to 10% of total household...

Global corporate capex expansion to slow down this year
JEDDAH — Global corporate capex increased by a mere 2% last year, and is estimated to expand only 3% in 2019, the latest forecasts from S&P Global Ratings disclosed Sunday. The forecasts further out need to be treated with caution, given that S&P analysis has shown a tendency for market analysts to underestimate capex beyond the first forecast year, but current projections point to a 1% decline in spending for 2020 and 2021.While the detail of the survey revealed a complex and varied prognosis by sector and region – with positive trends in some regions and many sectors – the broader reality is that corporate capex has been aperennial disappointment in this economic cycle, and all the more so given large and sustained monetary stimulus, cuts in corporate taxation, and plentiful...

Investors eye G20 with hopes for US-China trade detente

The benchmark index was volatile on Friday as hopes of trade progress offset concerns about US-Iran tensions. To extend the rally, one requirement will be friendly talks between the leaders of the world's two biggest economies. They are expected to meet in Japan on the sidelines of a Group of 20 (G20) summit next week.US-China negotiations spectacularly...
