Sony logs record profits, warns of headwinds to come
TOKYO — Japan's Sony said Friday that robust games and entertainment divisions had pushed annual profits to a second consecutive record high but warned of a looming downturn in its bottom line. The PlayStation manufacturer also said the integration of EMI Music Publishing as a fully-owned subsidiary had played well. Net profits soared 86.7 percent on-year to 916.3 billion yen ($8.2 billion) in the year ended in March while operating profit climbed 21.7 percent to 894.2 billion yen. Sales edged up 1.4 percent to 8.7 trillion yen. However, the future is looking less bright as this year's one-off boost partly from integrating EMI Music Publishing will make annual comparisons less rosy. Net profits for the current fiscal year to March 2020 were forecast to drop 45 percent to 500...

Iraq on track to be third oil supplier in 2030: IEA
BAGHDAD — Iraq is on track to produce nearly six million barrels of crude daily by 2030, the International Energy Agency said Thursday, which would make it the world's third biggest oil supplier. The IEA's wide-ranging report found that Iraq's production in the next decade could increase by an impressive 1.3 million barrels per day to a total of 5.9 million bpd. "Iraq is and will remain one of the key pillars of the oil market in the years to come," IEA head Fatih Birol told reporters on Thursday. The optimism stemmed from Iraq's 50 percent increase in oil production since 2012, Birol said, despite several years of low prices and the devastating rampage of the Islamic State group across a third of the country. "It shows the resilience of the Iraqi oil...

RBS boss resigns having turned around bailed-out bank
LONDON — Britain's state-rescued Royal Bank of Scotland said Thursday that chief executive Ross McEwan is to step down after having steered it to a strong financial position. New Zealander McEwan has been at the helm since 2013 and helped guide the Edinburgh-based giant to a steady recovery with a drastic restructuring following its dramatic bailout during the 2008 global financial crisis. The news comes after RBS revealed in February that it enjoyed its second successive year of profit in 2018, further cementing its recovery. "RBS announces that Ross McEwan has resigned from his role as chief executive officer and executive director," read a group statement on Thursday, the eve of its first-quarter results. The 61 year-old has a 12-month notice period and will remain...

India court reverses TikTok app restrictions: Report
NEW DELHI — An Indian court has reversed a decision that ordered Google and Apple to take down Chinese-owned video app TikTok over the spread of pornographic material, local media said. The controversial but wildly popular app allows users to upload and share short 15 second clips from their phones and claims to have 500 million users worldwide — more than 120 million of them in India. It is already banned in neighboring Bangladesh and was hit with an enormous fine in the United States for illegally collecting information from children. The Wednesday ruling by the Madras High Court in India's southern Tamil Nadu state requires the popular platform to prevent "obscene videos" from being posted. "(The court) warned if any controversial video violating its...

Swedbank admits money laundering flaws, cooperating with US authorities
STOCKHOLM — Swedbank admitted to failings in combating money laundering and said on Thursday it was facing investigations in the United States, adding to pressure over its Baltic business. Sweden's oldest bank, whose CEO and chairman have both left as money laundering allegations snowballed, is already facing a joint probe by financial watchdogs in Sweden and the Baltics and another by Sweden's economic crimes body. Swedbank has found itself caught up in a regional money laundering scandal originating with Danske Bank, which said last year that 200 billion euros ($223 billion) of suspicious funds moved through its Estonia branch between 2007 and 2015. Swedish broadcaster SVT has reported that Swedbank processed gross transactions worth up to 20 billion euros a year from...

SoftBank invests in Alphabet business for cellphone antennas in the sky
SAN FRANCISCO — A SoftBank Corp subsidiary said on Wednesday it had invested $125 million in an Alphabet Inc company that is working to fly cellphone antennas high in the atmosphere to provide Internet in areas that are difficult to reach. SoftBank's HAPSMobile, which has also been trying to fly networking equipment at high altitudes to provide high-speed internet to areas that are out of range of land towers, said it had invested in Loon, a unit of the Google owner. Loon, spun out from Alphabet's business incubator in July, carries the gear with a long balloon, while HAPSMobile uses a drone. Both systems are solar powered, limiting the areas they can serve to equatorial regions of the globe. Mobile network operators, governments and other potential clients have yet to...

Tesla hit with big loss as car deliveries sputter
NEW YORK — Electric carmaker Tesla on Wednesday announced a heavy loss in the first quarter as car deliveries sputtered overseas and a US tax credit that made its prices more attractive was reduced. The California-based company reported a loss of $702 million in the first three months of this year after two consecutive quarters of profit. Tesla produced about 63,000 Model 3 vehicles in the period, an increase of three percent from the same quarter a year earlier but fewer than had been anticipated. The company attributed its disappointing financial results to Model 3 shipping delays, particularly in Europe and China. Overall company revenue in the period rose 33 percent to $4.5 billion in a year-over-year comparison, but fell far short of Wall Street forecasts. The company's...

Nokia plunges to surprise quarterly loss, shares hit six-month low
HELSINKI — Finland's Nokia plunged to a surprise quarterly loss after it failed to supply 5G telecoms equipment in time, and said the security dispute surrounding rival Huawei was creating pressure to invest as customers reassess their suppliers. Shares fell 9 percent to 4.68 euros on the news on Thursday, their lowest level in six months. Nokia said it would be under significant pressure to deliver in the second half after a slow start to the year in supplying next-generation mobile gear. Nokia counts Sweden's Ericsson and China's Huawei as its main rivals, and some analysts say the Finnish company may benefit from challenges faced by Huawei after Washington alleged its equipment could be used by Beijing for spying - charges Huawei denies. Ericsson last week posted...
