Former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal joins Papa John's board
NEW YORK — Pizza chain Papa John's International Inc, trying to recover from a string of high-profile public relations blunders, on Friday named former basketball star Shaquille O'Neal as its newest board member, brand ambassador and investor. The move highlights the restaurant chain's attempts to fix its image after its founder, John Schnatter, reportedly used a racial slur on a media training conference call last year. Schnatter stepped down as chairman of the Papa John's board last summer but still holds approximately 30 percent of the company's shares and has been feuding with the chain over control. O'Neal, a popular product pitchman who was one of the National Basketball Association's best players in his prime, will invest in nine of the company's...

After Trump barbs, GM announces $1.8 bn investment, new jobs
NEW YORK — Facing a barrage of attacks from President Donald Trump over plant closures, General Motors announced Friday a $1.8 billion investment and the creation of 700 new jobs in the United States. About $300 million will be geared towards production of electric vehicles at the auto giant's Orion plant in Michigan, creating 400 jobs, the company said in a statement. Those vehicles had been slated for production outside of the United States. In November, GM shuttered five US plants, including auto assembly plants in Michigan and Ohio as part of a 15 percent cut in its workforce worldwide — cutting around 14,000 employees — which drew Trump's Twitter wrath. This week he urged the company to reopen the Lordstown, Ohio auto plant or sell it to someone who would. "We...

Shadow margin loans make a sly return as China stocks sizzle
SINGAPORE/SHANGHAI — On a cloudy March morning in Shanghai's glitzy financial district of Lujiazui, Ye Lixia was knocking on the doors of potential clients, offering loans to bet on a surging stock market. "We provide money to investors who need quick funding to capitalize on the market rally," Ye told Reuters. Ye, in her 30s and a general director at Bo Ying Asset Management, is one of the thousands of grey market lenders operating in the shadows of China's colossal capital markets. A stock market that shot up 25 percent in the last three months has revived the undercover margin lending business that was notoriously responsible for China's 2015 boom-bust market volatility. In defiance of warnings from the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), shadow...
