PARIS - The veteran French actress Catherine Deneuve was awarded one of the world's most lucrative arts prizes Wednesday. The star of such classics as "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "Belle de Jour", who made her name in the 1960s playing aloof, alluring beauties, is one of three French people honored by this year's Praemium Imperiale, which is backed by Japan's royal family.Deneuve, 74, sparked a worldwide feminist backlash earlier this year by defending men's right to "hit on" women in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. She later tried to row back on an open letter attacking the #MeToo movement she co-signed in the French daily Le Monde, insisting that there was not "anything good about harassment".Every year five...

Mud Day attracts thousands to play dirty
WESTLAND, Mich. - Made in the shade? It was more like made in the mud for hundreds of people at a Michigan park. Scores of children - and some parents - participated in the 31st annual Wayne County Mud Day on Wednesday at Nankin Mills Park in Westland, west of Detroit. They sloshed and slid around in a shallow "pool" of mud and engaged in various races and a limbo line. In keeping with tradition, there was something royal amid the soil: 3-year-old Charles Daviskiba and 4-year-old Molly Kofahl were crowned Mud Day King and Queen. After the festivities, a local fire department rig sprayed water to rinse the mud-caked masses. - AP

RIP: World's Ugliest Dog dead at age 9
WASHINGTON - Zsa Zsa's 15 minutes in the limelight are over: The copiously drooling English bulldog named the World's Ugliest Dog just weeks ago has died. The nine-year-old canine died in her sleep Wednesday morning, owner Megan Brainard of Anoka, Minnesota told US media. "I'm in shock still," Brainard told CNN sister network HLN. "I haven't even processed her winning and fame." The dog won the ugliness title at a contest last month in Petaluma, California. Brainard told CNN then that the dog slobbered a lot because it had trouble keeping its tongue in its mouth. Its upper teeth were almost horizontal and it also had a pronounced underbite. - AFP
