Parallel geniuses? Composer mashes up Beethoven and Kanye
LOS ANGELES - The orchestra charges into the furious opening notes from the last movement of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14. A drum-set kicks in, giving way to a new melody. The violins are still in charge. But suddenly the theme isn't Beethoven but a symphonic take on "On Sight," the abrasive starting salvo of Kanye West's "Yeezus" album. The crowd, standing close-up, more like in a rock concert than a classical hall, nods in approval.Welcome to "Yeethoven," a musical experiment that mashes up the works of artists two centuries apart who on the surface may appear to have little in common. But creators of "Yeethoven," whose second edition recently took place in Los Angeles, see similarities between Ludwig van Beethoven and Kanye...

Film about poor kids at Disney's gates is fairy tale hit
PARIS - It is already the fairy tale of this year's Oscars race: A little film about homeless children living in the shadow of Walt Disney World in Florida that threatens to turn the tables on the big-budget favorites.Director Sean Baker, who shot his last film on an iPhone, has scored a surprise hit with a gritty yet heartwarming tale, "The Florida Project".It has already been showered with prizes by US critics, usually reliable pointers for the Oscars, and has made the lists for best film of the year on both sides of the Atlantic. Not bad for a movie that no one initially wanted to back and whose rookie lead actor Baker found on Instagram.Driven by the remarkable performances he drew from Bria Vinaite as a tattooed single mother living hand-to-mouth in a motel with her...

Gaza eatery offers discounts to North Koreans but no takers
GAZA CITY - A Gaza eatery is offering massive discounts to North Korean diners but there is just one problem - there are no North Koreans in Gaza. Ibrahim Raba, manager of a shawarma restaurant in Gaza's Jabaliya refugee camp, says he is offering the 80 percent discounts to show his appreciation for North Korea's rejection of President Donald Trump's recent recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. He has also placed a large photo of reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on the glass door entrance to his restaurant. A new Kim fan, Raba likes to quote the North Korean leader, saying: "Trump proved he is mentally deranged." And though Raba knows there are no North Koreans in Gaza, he hopes they will come someday, perhaps after joining other foreign aid...

D-O-G is seen with a dog at Support Dogs, Inc. in St. Louis, Missouri.
C-A-T named D-O-G is star canine trainer
ST. LOUIS - A cat with an unlikely name has an important job at a training center for dogs. Support Dogs, Inc. in St. Louis took in the black and white cat over the summer and named him D-O-G (dee-OH'-jee). He's more than a mascot - officials say he plays a key role getting the dogs comfortable around other animals. Assistance dogs need to be well-behaved and not be distracted in their job helping people who are deaf or have mobility problems. Support Dogs president and CEO Anne Klein says D-O-G is "fearless" around the larger canines and plays with their tails, sleeps in their beds and eats and drinks from their bowls instead of his own. The dogs go through a two-year training program before they're given to clients for free. - AP
