Seeking repentance: Killing two birds with one stone
By N.U .Abdul Razzak UdayarTo err is human, to forgive is divine. This well-known adage clearly points out that human beings by nature often tend to make mistakes and commit sins.Islam, as a perfect religion, agrees to this truth as no man is perfect in this world. As the Holy month of Ramadan gives us a strong and effective training to build a good character it is apt to reflect on the importance of seeking repentance.“Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves”. — (Sura Baqarah 222).Repentance helps believers kill two birds with one stone. When the forgiveness is accepted, they not only get relief free from bad deeds but also get merits for this unique act of worship. The best among all people, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)...

EID shopping spree
Bint AyeshaAmidst the kaleidoscope of colorful clothes, jewelry, and what not, one can hardly decide what to purchase. Our budget lingers at the back of our heads as a warning signal cautioning us not to spend more than we can afford. Eating away at our precious time in Ramadan, many of us are caught up in window shopping, which has become a form of entertainment by those who are proficient in this art.And indeed window shopping has become an art! Staring wistfully at the mannequins displaying the latest trends, envying those capable of hoarding the sales items, bargaining with the salesmen, and ending up with a load of bags to carry. An extremely unproductive “art”, resulting in nothing more than hours of wasted time, ingratitude towards Allah The Most Merciful, and sowing the seeds...

Returning to the Holy Qur’an in word and practice
Saudi GazetteMore than half of the blessed month of Ramadan has passed and we need to be wary of losing that initial fervor and energy we had in the beginning of Ramadan for reading the Qur’an and praying night prayers at the mosque. Our pious predecessors used to anticipate Ramadan almost all year long and spend their time in worship and making supplication to ready themselves for Ramadan. For the six months before Ramadan, they would ask Allah to grant them long life so that they could witness Ramadan. And after Ramadan, for the next six months they would ask Allah to accept their fasting and prayers in Ramadan. The present day trials and tribulations, demands on our time, and also the temptations around us can detract from our spiritual growth this Ramadan. The solution to protect our...

Zakatul Fitr completes the charitable spirit of Ramadan
Every year, people prepare for the holy month of reward and anticipate the immense rewards to be gained in this month. Ramadan is not only about fasting; the fourth pillar of Islam, but during this month believers strive to do a host of good deeds, gathering with the family, helping others, giving to the poor, and all other ways of giving and cooperation. The holy month of Ramadan is extremely significant since the Holy Qur’an was first revealed in this month, and it has a night in it that is better than a thousand months.{Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may learn piety and righteousness.} (Chapter 2: Verse183)Fasting during Ramadan creates in a Muslim sympathy with the poor people. During Ramadan people express this...

Healthy soups for breaking the fast
Saudi GazetteRamadan is that time of year that triggers nostalgia for the past, for childhood days, for family, and for my mom’s cooking. As soon as Ramadan starts, I crave my mother’s lentil soup, fattoush salad, flaky homemade pastries, and other scrumptious meals. It is a Ramadan tradition in almost every home to serve soup for the breaking of the fast meal. This Ramadan tradition is actually healthy and good for our bodies after a long fast. Soups are easy on the stomach and easy to digest after a fast. Also, it is an excellent way to replace fluids lost during the day. Making soup is an excellent way to get your family to eat vegetables. The added benefit is that the vitamins and minerals are preserved in the soup. When cooking vegetables, the vitamins and minerals leach out into...

Unraveling wonders in the Holy Qur’an
Saudi GazetteRamadan is the month of fasting, and it is also the month of Qur’an. It was during Ramadan that the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).{The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.} (Chapter 2, verse 185 of the Holy Qu’ran)Eager to gain the rewards in this month, many of us rush to read the entire Qur’an and we compete to complete even more than once before the month is over. While dedicating your time to reading the Qur’an is no doubt praiseworthy, I call upon my Muslim brothers and sisters to take a slightly different approach this Ramadan.Rather than hastily reading through, why not pick a certain chapter or chapters of the...

Ramadan, a month of blessings and mercy
By N.U. Abdul Razzak UdayarMuslims all over the world are warmly welcoming the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, which is full of blessings and mercy.“In Ramadan, Gates of paradise are opened, Gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained up.”— Sahihal Bukhari.Every Muslim or for that matter non-Muslim gets this rare opportunity to turn a new leaf to get success in this world and the Hereafter.Ramadan is the ideal occasion when a Muslim can easily display proper behavior, positive attitude and the ideal actions that are promoted by Islam encouraging unity in diversity.Fasting is the fourth obligatory duty for Muslims. It is not a mere ritual when we refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk. It is an act of worship done with dedication and spirit.Let us...

Why learn the beautiful names and attributes of Allah?
Saudi Gazette ReportThe renowned scholar Ash-Shafi`ee said, “Whoever wants to attain the worldly life, then he has to gain knowledge, and whoever wants the Hereafter, then he has to gain knowledge. And whoever wants both the dunya and akhira, then upon him is to seek knowledge.”Islam places great emphasis on the importance of learning about Allah’s marvelous creation around us. Each person is to pursue and to try to excel at the field which sparks his/her interest; be it astronomy, human anatomy & physiology, the microscopic world of bacteria and viruses, psychology, or mechanics and the laws of physics, or mathematics. We are encouraged, in fact we are commanded, to learn and to go after education, because it is with education that we can truly serve humanity and become vicegerents...

Shaban, the gateway to Ramadan
Saudi GazetteBefore we know it, the month of Shaban will pass, and many of us may have failed to reflect on how important this month is or how we could spiritually lift ourselves during this month. Contrary to popular belief, spirituality is in the air, not only during Ramadan and Haj, but even now in Shaban. Are we fully aware of the lunar months that are most significant in Islam and of the golden opportunities for gaining rewards?Time will not wait for anyone; the intelligent ones seize every opportunity to do a good deed; to kneel down in prayer at night, to buy a gift for their mothers to show love and appreciation.A great opportunity for gaining rewards, clarifying the mind, and cleansing the body is fasting.Fasting trains and strengthens the believer, physically, mentally, and...
