The Significance of Shawwal
The month of Shawwal is the tenth month in the Hijri calendar and it has great significance for all Muslims. During pre-Islamic times, Arabs believed that any marriage held in Shawwal would always turn out to be a failure. Superstitions and pessimistic beliefs were common in the pre-Islamic Arabian society. Islam came to change these mistaken beliefs and negative perceptions, including that of the month of Shawwal. Islam transformed these negative ideas and beliefs into positive ones. Shawwal begins Eid-ul-Fitr, the day of festival as a reward for fasting and long prayers throughout the month of Ramadan. Shawwal is the month of one of the two annual festivals in Islam; Eid-ul-Fitr. This happy day is a sign of gratefulness by the Muslims on the accomplishment of Ramadan, and as an immediate...

Becoming Complacent
Now that Ramadan is over, some people will sadly revert to their old selves, wasting away the hours spent in training to change for the better. Others will use the excuse that worship in Ramadan makes up for the rest of the year. But this, my friends, is simply a mask for laziness and perhaps hypocrisy also. We are in no position to judge anyone for their lack of sincerity after Ramadan, but we must point out that one of the signs of an accepted Ramadan is that the spiritual high continues on long after the month has passed. We may have come across a few of the following types of people who fall back into their old habits after Ramadan. The People of the 27th Night:These people only come to the mosque on the 27th night of Ramadan. They filled the mosques with pillows and blankets as they...

The other side of the Prophet’s story in Taif
Amal Al-SibaiSaudi GazetteWhen Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) called the people to Islam in Makkah, he was opposed by the leaders of the tribes of Quraysh. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was ridiculed and those who converted to Islam were persecuted and tortured. The people of Quraysh boycotted the Muslims for three years, and the Muslims suffered from sickness, hunger, and poverty. In the same year, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lost his two strongest supporters and sources of comfort, his wife, Khadijah, and his uncle, Abu Talib.Without the protection of his uncle, Abu Talib, in Makkah, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) needed to reach out and seek support beyond the city of Makkah. He (peace be upon him) wanted to spread the message to the people of Taif, in hopes that...

How does your family welcome Ramadan?
Amal Al-SibaiSaudi GazetteRamadan is like a special guest who only comes once a year and is beloved by Muslims all over the world. It is the month which brings countless blessings, and in which we can earn the mercy and forgiveness of our Lord.As adults, parents, teachers, and leaders in the community, we want our children to be just as happy and excited about Ramadan as we are, and more. How can we involve them in welcoming the month of Ramadan, and in becoming dedicated to observe the fast and prayers throughout the whole month?Due to the television and Internet, our children see all the festivities and happiness that surround the non-Muslim holidays, such as Christmas, Easter, and others. They see the lit up homes, the decorations, wrapped gifts, and celebrations, but we do not partake...

‘500kg’ Egyptian woman’s sister accuses Indian doctors of lying
MUMBAI, India — Indian doctors on Tuesday angrily rejected claims that they had lied about the amount of weight an Egyptian once believed to be the world’s heaviest woman had lost following surgery. The sister of Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty alleged that her sibling, who previously weighed 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds), had not shed half her weight as specialists at a Mumbai hospital had claimed.“Today Eman weighs 171 kilos,” Muffazal Lakdawala, the doctor leading Abd El Aty’s treatment, said, adding that the claim made by her sister Shaimaa Selim in a social media video post was “complete hogwash.”In videos provided last week by Saifee Hospital, where the 37-year-old had bariatric surgery last month, a visibly slimmer Abd El Aty could be seen sitting up and smiling while listening to...

Purification of the tongue
Amal Al-SibaiSaudi GazetteProphet Muhammad (peace be upon him) carried the weight of the duty to deliver the Message of the Oneness of Allah, and to preach about Islam. Along with teaching the pillars of Islam and the acts of worship, he (peace be upon him) also showed the best of character so that we may follow him.The yardstick which we use to measure our character should be up to the standards that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has set. Just because everyone else is doing one thing or the other does not make it right.Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “I have been sent to perfect good character.” (Al-Muwatta)It is not becoming of a Muslim with good character to use foul language, yet we are surrounded by it. We hear obscene and vulgar...

More than a headscarf: How hijab has lost its soul
Shazia AhmadCourtesy of Iman WireHijab is a frequently discussed topic in our community and a practice dissected and opined over from many different angles. While it is talked about frequently, in many of the most important ways it is little understood. Our discourse on hijab is often devoid of any meaningful consideration of it as an act of devotion, which is its primary purpose. There is also little reflection on the foundational quality from which hijab emanates — haya’ (modesty). These are the heart and soul of hijab that we, individually and as a community, often overlook.THE INWARD AND THE OUTWARDIslam teaches that at its core, hijab should be a spiritual act done seeking God. More than a means of personal expression, or a cultural or political statement, it should be an act of...
