The doctors and their patients
Makkah newspaperA SAUDI newspaper recently published a study, which revealed that doctors listen to their patients an average of 11 seconds before prescribing medicines. There is truth in this number, but at the same time it is an unfair estimate. I believe this number is true in most cases but it is untrue in other cases as there are doctors who listen and speak to their patients up to11 minutes before prescribing the course of treatment. It seems as if it is not the doctor’s duty to explain the health condition of a patient because of lethargy. He will never talk to the patient about the details of the illness as he gets tired and bores of making such explanations. This is generally the opinion of patients toward doctors. You can see rarely doctors who speak to you for a long time,...

Women prisoners without families
Okaz newspaperTHE world is making efforts to reduce the number of prisoners because the high costs of punishing, reforming and refining inmates lie on the shoulders of the governments.I fully back the proposal to dry up prisons especially as the crimes of a large number of the inmates did not cause any heavy damage to society. The prison terms in their cases should have been substituted by community service, which will benefit both the prisoners and society at large. The management of prisons can monitor the prisoners doing community service by special electronic bracelets that have proved successful in many parts of the world. Our prisons are replete with expatriate prisoners who will be deported to their respective homes after serving their prison terms. If we are going to deport them...

Heart banks
Al-Riyadh newspaperORGAN transplantation is no longer a difficult or rare process. However, it still faces an age-old problem: the probability of organ rejection. This occurs when the transplanted tissue is rejected by the recipient’s immune system, which destroys the transplanted tissue mistaking it for an invasive foreign body. The immune system is our first defense against from viruses, bacteria and any foreign body that might harm us or cause us to fall sick. When the immune system detects a foreign body that does not carry a similar code as that of our body, it starts attacking or rejecting it. Hence, when a new organ is transplanted, it might function normally at the start. But the immune system will soon identify the foreign body and start attacking it.The solution doctors are...

Tourist attractions of KSA
Al-Riyadh newspaperTHE tourism sector has of late obtained a profound attention from the officials. This is a clear reflection that the leadership is determined to uplift this sector under policies and strategies that are commensurate with the Kingdom's Vision 2030.The leadership is keen that tourism should contribute positively in presenting an illuminating image of Saudi Arabia that will make it an attractive haven to tourists from all over the world.Tourism will have positive repercussions on the national economy, will create more jobs for the young Saudi men and women, achieve entertainment for the citizens and enable them to participate in the process of the comprehensive development in the country. The Kingdom is rich in tourist potential and its tourist sites have characteristics...

On music, life and beauty
Al-Watan newspaperMUSIC is a controversial topic that has triggered a big debate among religious scholars and other members of society. Some of them argue that music being an instrument of devil is part of temptations that prevent people from remembering God and the five-time obligatory prayers. For them it promotes hypocrisy and arouses base feelings to commit prostitution. Some scholars have allowed singing songs without the support of musical instruments at weddings and Eid festivities. However, entertainers in such events are permitted to use drums. There is another group who considers music as permissible like other good things on the earth allowed by God.The negative approach toward music has led to fighting all forms of art. The prohibition was not limited to singing and music, but...

The low ratio of Saudi workers in healthcare sector
Al-Watan newspaperTHE most recent statistics on human resources in the health sector, which was published by the Ministry of Health about two years ago, indicate that there is a clear shortage of Saudi cadres in healthcare, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists and lab technicians. The statistics revealed the number of Saudi and non-Saudi workers in the health sector including hospitals under the ministry, the National Guard and other government entities. When we analyze the data we can find that Saudis represent only 26.7 percent of the total number of doctors in the health sector while the ratio of Saudi nurses stood at 36.5 percent. The percentage of Saudi pharmacists stands at 22 percent, representing graduates of pharmacology faculties. On the other hand, the ratio of support staff...

How to gauge customer satisfaction
Makkah newspaperSOME organizations such as airports set up a small device to record customer satisfaction by touching one of four faces on the device. The first one shows a broad smiling face, the second is a little smiley, the third a yellow smiley and the last shows extreme sadness. Each face indicates a certain level of satisfaction or lack of satisfaction.Personally, I don’t like the use of such strange devices to gauge customer satisfaction toward various services offered by any organization and I hope most people would agree with my view because satisfaction depends on different factors. For example, the absence of conflict between the employee and the customer is one of the indicators. I believe every department should have a register to record disputes. If there is only one...

Bury the dirty lake
Okaz newspaperI AM not exaggerating when I say that the talk about the pollution of Arbaeen Lake, or the Sea of Mud as it was historically called, goes back to tens of years during which the citizens have also read about amounts of money running into millions that were earmarked for the cleaning of the lake and protecting it from pollution. The lake has turned from a beacon of beauty into an eye sore just like the sewage trucks, and the bumps and potholes filling our streets. The news reports that were written about the cleaning of the lake in the past were enough to fill it. These reports would have been sufficient to dry up the dirty water of the notorious lake. The citizens who were waiting to hear the good news that the lake had been saved from pollution must be shocked when they read in...

Addiction to smartphones
Al-Jazirah newspaperI DO not absolve myself of the sin of overusing the smartphone. Nor do I consider myself more principled than other people. But I am sure I am the last in line among smartphone users especially when I am with family, relatives and friends, or attending a function.I am rarely busy with the phone except when there is an important work I should do.In normal situations, I keep my cell phone away by putting it in my purse when I have guests in my home. But if I am expecting an important call or message, or when I am outside my home, I keep the phone by me.I started with myself before talking about what I see as a social menace: the use of mobile phones at gatherings. This is a clear indication that these smartphone addicts have no respect for the people with whom they sit.I...

Quarterly results: Everyone wins
Okaz newspaperI HAVE noticed that so far the majority of the Saudi banks and companies that announced their quarterly results have made profits despite all the grim talk about the economic situation in the Kingdom. The impact of the economic conditions has not touched the big shots at all but may be the small guns in a certain degree. Some of the businessmen and investors tend to consider any drop in the profits as downright losses.I remember that one day I was sitting with the chairman of the board of directors of a cement company. He was complaining that his company ran into losses because its products were no longer exported abroad.I asked him not to speak about losses but to say that his profits had dropped. I told him that his company was still making huge profits and was distributing...
