India must resist policy of racial division
It has been five months since the government of India slammed Kashmir and more than eight million of its residents into a lockdown, isolated from most of the world and subject to the gauntlet of increased Indian forces sent to the region to suppress movement and resistance. The region’s population is predominantly Muslim. In other parts of India, the streets are on fire as Muslims, Hindus and people of other faiths have risen up against the discriminatory conditions of the recently imposed Citizenship Law that clearly spells danger for India’s Muslim residents despite denials by the ruling BJP party. For the record, many of India’s secular intellectuals have warned of the seeds of the notorious RSS scriptures that are based on communal division and racial hatred of minorities that...

A conference and the question of credibility!
History teaches us that moral credibility is what legitimizes people as well as nations. You cannot, for example, be a lawyer for a case if you are accused of similar crimes. I thought of this while I followed news of the Islamic conference recently held in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur attended by Iran, Turkey and Qatar. The conference was meant to support the issues of Muslims in Kashmir and Palestine as well as the Uighurs in China. There is no question that there are serious crimes committed against Muslims in these countries, but it is unfair for the team of lawyers to be Turkey, Iran and Qatar.Turkey is the country that annexed the Iskenderun Brigade area from Syria and now occupies by military force the area north of the Syrian Euphrates. It intervenes militarily in Libya to...

Kuala Lumpur 'Political Islam' Summit
“Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll tell you who you are!” goes an Arab proverb. This is also the case with those who joined Iran and Turkey in the Islamic “mini” Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The whole setup was weird and suspicious from the outset. According to the organizers, a new organization, initiated in 2014 by then retired Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad decided a few months ago to call for a conference of Islamic NGOs to discuss various political and economic issues. They included Islamophobia, Islamic minorities, world peace, facing up to Western hegemony and the advancement of science and technology. None of these issues is urgent or new. They were all discussed during the last Islamic Summit in Makkah among 57 Muslim states, as well as in various meetings and...

Turbulence in the Mediterranean!
While major events in Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, and other places around the world occupy the news, there are other smaller events taking place in the Mediterranean that are important to monitor because they can be like a snowball that increases in size as it rolls down a mountain or a small spark which sets off a great fire. The Russians put their feet firmly on the Mediterranean coast through the military bases they obtained from the Syrian regime and the provocative Turkish "movement" against Cyprus, Greece and Egypt led to an increase in tense and sharp statements. The United States entered into an unprecedented defense agreement with Greece with the American navy using a Greek military base after NATO member Turkey concluded a weapons deal with Russia to purchase S-400 anti-aircraft...

Canada, dwarfed by neighbors, seeks global role
Former prime minister Pierre Trudeau once stated that living next door to a giant neighbor like the US was like sleeping with an elephant. You had to be careful to avoid being crushed. Still, Canada and the US enjoy extremely friendly relations.Historically, this has not been easy. Canada was invaded by its big neighbor in 1812 and at other times, but it repulsed the attacks. Canada was also berated by the US for not supporting the US in Vietnam - then president Lyndon Johnson even reportedly came close to roughing up visiting Canadian prime minister Lester Pearson for not backing the US war militarily. However, Canada defied the pressure and continued to promote peace and cooperation in Vietnam. The US has grudgingly accepted that Canada, in its history, population and policies, is...

India splinters with divisive moves
It has been more than four months since the people of Kashmir in the Indian administered region have been placed under heavy armed lockdown, with all communication to the outside world cut off. The abrogation of an article in the Constitution that provided the predominantly Muslim Kashmiris with a special status was dismissed with the stroke of a pen when the Modi-led BJP government made null and void the decades-old agreement and used strong-arm tactics to suppress dissent.Following the re-election of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister, the agenda of the ruling party focused on two emotion-filled explosive elements: Kashmir and migration. Both share a common thread of bias against Muslims following a script set by the Hindutva, as “outlined in the 1920s by V. D. Savarkar, a...

Aramco losers: Sue Western media!
It seems like the Financial Times and Wall Street Journal are not ready to admit that they were dead-wrong about Aramco. The Big Name papers are not brave enough to explain how and why they took their sharpest shots against the Saudi giant and missed.Just before the sale of 1.5 percent of the company in its Initial Public Offering, the FT and WSJ led a coordinated negative campaign with some US and European investment firms. They claimed that the company at 1.7 - 1.8 trillion dollars was overpriced. The right value, they argued, was 1.2-1.3 trillion. They also warned that the Saudi stock market, Tadawul, was too small and vulnerable to accommodate the IPO.Even though Aramco was, by far, the most profitable company in the world, much higher than Shell or British Petroleum, had the largest...

2020!
As 2019 draws to a close, it is time to look forward to some of the important events to be expected in 2020.The new year may witness an historic trade agreement between China and the United States of America. China has been affected by the financial sanctions imposed on its goods, and the Trump administration desires an important achievement before November’s presidential election.A formal and final exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union is also expected, and this will have significant and important domestic consequences and may increase the appetite of Scotland to leave the UK, resulting in the gradual transformation of Great Britain to Lesser England. Europe may experience greater tension with the Trump administration, along with greater exploitation of this circumstance by...

Our young men and women, our future!
“The moment I arrived at King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah, I noticed the difference,” observed the Asian Consul. “It has been many years since my first visit to Saudi Arabia. Since that time I was stationed in Tehran, before being transferred back here. The first thing I witnessed was that all passport officers were now female. That’s a first, even by world standards,” he added. “My family and I were warmly impressed when the passport officer greeted us in our own language, and talked gently with our kids. She was very efficient, too. Our passports were stamped in seconds, and we were on our way within minutes - no lines, no questions, no waiting. The airport is the same as it was the last time, but the system efficiency and female touch make all the difference,” he smiled...

The role of geopolitics in GCC unity
Stereotypes and generalizations are both associated with an uneducated mind, as relations and interests are subject to change. Furthermore, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have a common history, with Saudi Arabia leading the group with its geographical size and large population. The objectives of the GCC are to effect coordination and interconnection between member states in all fields, so as to achieve unity between them and to deepen and strengthen cooperation between their peoples. All current member states are monarchies, two absolute monarchies (Saudi Arabia and Oman), three constitutional monarchies (Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain) and one federal monarchy (United Arab Emirates).Prior to the 21st century, Saudi Arabia and Qatar developed a historical bilateral relationship and...
