Life challenges from a different perspective
Life challenges can be terrifying. When going through a big life challenge, I usually feel like someone driving his car the wrong way: I expect to crash at any moment. I feel as if there is a force inside trying to make me change direction and go back to my comfort zone.To show how difficult it is for me to overcome this kind of fear, I will tell you a personal story. I joined a public speaking club a few years ago while studying in Australia. The first time I went to a meeting, I found the club to be different than what I had expected. It turned out that we would be learning by practice, and I would have to give many speeches. Therefore, my first assignment was to give an icebreaker speech. On the day of my first speech, I wore my best shirt and came to the meeting on time. To my surprise,...

A way to achieve financial independence
During the course of our lives, we explore various methods to make a decent income. Most people undergo the route of employment where they start at a certain pay level and try to make their way through the pay scale. Their wages determine their lifestyle and can contribute to their prosperity. With this conviction, some will exert every possible effort to put their best foot forward to do what they believe is right, that is to work harder. In the process they might lose sight of other important aspects of life and, more sadly, after some time, they might realize that they were in a rat race that got them nowhere and did not achieve their aspirations. Apart from hard work, there are other circumstances beyond the control of individuals that could prevent them from reaching their career...

Watering down our righteousness
Is the world an objective phenomenon that exists independently of our ideas? According to the philosopher George Berkeley, it isn’t. Though his controversial idea is often ridiculed, it is because it has been widely misinterpreted to mean “no object is real” or “the world does not really exist without us”, whereas his intention was quite different: he was proposing that our ideas are our reality. He illustrated this through a thought experiment that can be argued to have far-reaching implications on our thought process and on how we interact with others around us.Briefly put, the experiment illustrates that if you immerse a cold hand and a warm hand in water of intermediate temperature, the water would feel warm to the cold hand and cold to the warm hand. Does that make the water...

Was the previous generation better at parenting?
It is an obvious and undeniable truth that today the world is changing at a rapid pace. There seems to have been a revolution in everything we do and everything we believe in the past decade or so. Ideas, ideals, morals, ethics and general human behavior and attitude toward everything have rapidly been modified by the changes all around us. Our lifestyle, habits, hobbies and day-to-day activities have all experienced a change. There is no doubt that with everything around us happening so fast, we are left with too little time to accomplish all the tasks that need to be completed. Life is now more demanding than ever. Economic crises, the sky-high prices of just about everything and inflation make jobs or working around the clock for some not a choice, but a necessity. Due to all this, it...

Combating Islamophobia in the UK indigenously and exogenously
It has been quite a while since my articles on this subject appeared in this newspaper. However, in the meantime, some developments are unfolding within, and outside, the UK. This article will attempt to assess the potential impact thereof. On March 22, 2018, I received a message from The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor of the City of London, through the executive director of his office saying:“The Lord Mayor and I would like to thank you for making us aware of your concerns regarding the safety of Saudi investments in the UK and for sharing your articles in the Saudi Gazette with the Court of Common Council and Court of Aldermen.”The initial response of any writer is usually a sense of gratification that the word did hit home. In this particular case I felt more than that; a sense of...

Why don’t we just wait in line?
QUEUES may be exhausting to wait in if they are too long, but they are usually there for organizational purposes. We see them everywhere, such as in cinemas, theme parks, passport control in airports, etc. What I don’t understand is why some people disregard queues. I see people jumping to the head of the line at a counter. I sometimes see that happening at hospital receptions and in shops.Sure we want to be served fast, but shouldn’t we also think about the other people who are waiting in the line who also wish to be served as quickly as possible? Why don’t we put ourselves in their shoes? Wouldn’t we be annoyed if someone (a latecomer) skipped ahead of us and went straight to the counter? It does not seem fair to everyone, does it? That is if we want to talk about fairness.People...

Why don’t we just wait in line?

WWE: From TV to reality
I STILL remember sitting on the lap of my father in the late evening watching TV from the old box-shaped device with an antenna on top which every once in a while we had to move to get the signal right. We would wait the whole week for Friday night so we could watch (World Wrestling Entertainment) WWE (formerly known as WWF). My father would be as pumped as the WWE stars competing in the match.Although these shows were presented by an Arab commentator, he was no match for the comments that my father used to make. We used to sit 10 meters away from the TV with me on his lap but by the end of the show I would be thrown to one side of the room. My father heavily grunting, sweating and emotionally high shouted to Jimmy Superfly Sanuka not to waste time and go to the corner of the ring to jump...

Work culture: Involvement, growth and creativity
When I was young, my father would tell me the story of a farmer who divided his land between his two sons before dying, so that they could cultivate the land in order to earn their livelihood. After the farmer died, the elder son would get up early, collect his workers and would march off to his field with the attitude of “Come on let’s go and work” while the younger son hired workers for a price and told them to go and plough the fields and bring back the produce to him when ready.Slowly the elder son began to prosper whereas the younger one, who was lazy and demanding, began losing money and finally became a pauper. Although the younger son would blame many things for his failure, he refused to examine his attitude towards work, which was the main reason for his downfall. The basic...

Wake up Mother India! Your daughters are calling.
In the eyes of the world, India is greatly admired for its social ideals ingrained in the values of democracy, and it is progressing towards gender equality. That said, for a citizen of this celebrated nation, it is quite appalling to see the hashtags: “Beware in sending your females to India”, “Women are not worthy as cows in India”, “India is women’s graveyard”, “Don’t make India a Rape Republic” or a number of other abrasive phrasings of the same bitter tone in public protests and on social media. This is very much understandable for all those who are conversant with the present harsh realities in the country where the number of rape killings is horrendously high. All of those, like me, who feel proud of having been born in this noble country are now seized by a...

Broken blood relations
Sometimes tales remain untold and hurtful happenings lie buried in deep memories. The bonds of family blood relations weaken amid enraged emotions, frequent discord and unpleasant separation. How sad it is when grownup children, from one father and one mother, abstain from communication due to trivial issues! The beauty of childhood in human lives is that it is a phase full of playfulness, innocence and cheerfulness. Even if children are at times at odds with each other, there is quick accord and all is forgotten. That is the spirit that strengthens their bonding with love and solidarity. As children pass through adolescence and enter into adulthood, a whole new world appears. There are more likes and dislikes, shifting pursuits, disparate deliberations and traces of egotism and many more...
