Dortmund sinks Liverpool in US tour opener
CHICAGO — Danish internationals Thomas Delaney and Jacob Bruun Larsen scored second half goals as Borussia Dortmund handed Liverpool a 3-2 defeat in the opening game of the Premier League giants pre-season US tour on Friday. In sweltering heat at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, Bundesliga side Dortmund punished a rusty defensive display from the European champions, who were missing several star players.Brazilian internationals Roberto Firmino and Alisson were both absent for the Reds following their Copa America campaign along with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, both missing due to the African Cup of Nations.Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp opted for a youthful starting line-up against his former club before making 10 changes in the second half."It was a very difficult game...

Maori All Blacks revenge loss to Fiji
WELLINGTON — Fiji's World Cup preparations suffered a setback Saturday when they were beaten 26-17 by a re-energized Maori All Blacks side in Rotorua. At half-time, it was 7-7 but the low score was no reflection of the frantic pace of the game with daring off-loads and bone-crunching tackles in which the Maori outscored Fiji four tries to two.The Maori, more at home in temperatures nearly 20 degrees Celsius cooler than last week in Suva, kept faith in the 23 who were demolished 27-10 in Fiji's first win over the Maori in 62 years.Fiji coach John McKee, using the match as a trial as he fine-tunes his squad ahead of the World Cup, made 10 changes and the result was a pack that struggled at lineout and scrum time. But captain Dominiko Waqaniburotu believed that despite the scoreline,...

Australia pips South Africa to reach netball World Cup final
NEW YORK — Holders Australia edged out South Africa 55-53 in a thrilling netball World Cup semifinal on Saturday to remain on course for a 12th crown from 15 editions of the tournament since 1963.The Diamonds, winners of the previous three World Cups, next meet hosts England or New Zealand who will contest the second semi-final later on Saturday at Liverpool's M&S Bank Arena.Victory did not come easily for top-ranked Australia who surged to an eight-goal lead at halftime but had to stave off a determined comeback by the Proteas in the last two quarters."It's amazing. It wasn't pretty but a win is a win. We go again and we're so excited," Australia's Liz Watson, who was named player of the match, said."I think it came down to heart and passion. We kept...

Penny drops for Canada's teen swim queen Oleksiak
GWANGJU, South Korea – Canada's Penny Oleksiak insists she has finally left the "weirdness" of capturing Olympic swimming gold at the tender age of 16 after finally recovering from a lengthy Rio hangover.Oleksiak, who is preparing for the world championships which begin in South Korea this weekend, stunned the sport when she dead-heated American Simone Manuel in the women's 100 meters freestyle final as a gangly schoolgirl. The Canadian also came away from Rio with a silver medal in the 100m butterfly and two relay bronzes but has struggled to replicate that form since."It was definitely a massive learning experience," Oleksiak told AFP after training in Gwangju."It was just so different to what most 16-year-olds would have to deal with," she added,...

Sun asks CAS for public hearing over doping case
GWANGJU, South Korea — Triple Olympic champion Sun Yang has asked sport's highest tribunal to hold a public hearing of his doping case in order to give him the chance to clear his name, lawyers for the Chinese swimmer have said.Sun, currently in South Korea to compete at the world championships, was cleared by a FINA doping panel of breaching the governing body's rules earlier this year. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency is seeking to overturn the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which will hear the case in September.Australia's Daily Telegraph last Sunday posted a 59-page report by the FINA panel following a hearing at which Sun admitted to refusing to comply with an out-of-competition test because of his doubts over testers' accreditation. In a...

Win or lose, Peaty stands to gain at world championships
GWANGJU, South Korea — Losing is not something Adam Peaty does, or thinks about, very often but even if the Olympic breaststroke champion comes up short at the world swimming championships in South Korea it is unlikely to dent his confidence one little bit.Unbeaten in the 100 meters at major championships over the last five years, and with the 14 fastest times ever swam in the event, there will be few stronger favorites than the 24-year-old Briton in Gwangju.Peaty, who also holds the world record in the 50 but suffered his first defeat in four years in the event at last year's Commonwealth Games, says every race makes him stronger – win or lose."I think a lot of athletes fear failure," he said in a conference call ahead of the championships. "But I've failed...

Tomic's appeal against fine rejected, receives stinging rebuke
NEW YORK — Australian Bernard Tomic's appeal to overturn a fine for not playing to "required professional standards" at Wimbledon earlier this month has been denied in a stinging rebuke by the Grand Slam board.Tomic lost his first round match 6-2, 6-, 6-4 to France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Wimbledon and was fined his entire winnings of 45,000 pounds ($56,241) after organizers ruled he had put in minimal effort in the 58-minute defeat. The 26-year-old Tomic appealed the decision, citing the fact he was unwell before the match, while Tsonga added that he felt his victory had been devalued. The board, however, refused to overturn their original decision and heavily criticized Tomic's attitude to tennis."A review of your historical record of misconduct at Grand Slams,...

AFCON defies logic to turn event into unexpected success
CAIRO – Played in the searing heat of the Egyptian summer, against a backdrop of chaos in the regional governing body CAF and enlarged to an unwieldy 24 teams, this year's Africa Cup of Nations defied logic and, on the pitch at least, turned into a surprising success. In terms of drama on the field and football quality, the tournament was a step up on previous editions and, encouragingly, two teams led by young African coaches reached Friday’s final with Algeria beating Senegal 1-0.Although the final itself was a disappointment, the knockout stages were packed with drama.South Africa knocked out hosts Egypt and then lost out to a last minute goal in the quarterfinal against Nigeria who themselves were sunk by a Riyad Mahrez free kick deep into stoppage time in their semifinal...
