One woman’s battle to push Africa’s space race
YAOUNDÉ — Cameroonian scientist Marie Makuate has been at the forefront of using information harvested by satellites to help save the lives of people on Earth in emergencies, but she argues the expense of the data should spur more African countries to launch their own space hardware. In the hours after the deadly earthquake struck central Morocco last September, the 32-year-old’s phone started buzzing. She was thousands of kilometers from the zone of destruction, but her skills analyzing satellite images were vital.“I woke up hearing message notifications of my colleagues telling me that there had been a disaster in Morocco,” Makuate told the BBC from her base in the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé.As a geospatial expert for the NGO Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, she creates maps to...

HARARE — Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a national disaster to tackle the prolonged drought crisis.Mnangagwa said on Wednesday the country needs $2bn (£1.6bn) to tackle hunger caused by low rainfall which has wiped out about half of the maize crop. The grain shortage has pushed up food prices and an estimated 2.7 million people will face hunger.Neighboring Zambia and Malawi have also declared states of disasters due to drought recently. The drought is a result of the El Nino global weather pattern and has triggered a humanitarian crisis in southern Africa.Zimbabwe now joins the regional scramble to find enough maize on the international market.Authorities say that the number of people needing food aid will be higher than the initial projection.Zimbabwe was once...

Botswana offers to send 20,000 elephants to Germany
GABORONE — The president of Botswana has threatened to send 20,000 elephants to Germany in a political dispute.Earlier this year, Germany's environment ministry suggested there should be stricter limits on importing hunting trophies.Botswana's president Mokgweetsi Masisi told German media this would only impoverish people in his country. He said elephant numbers had exploded as a result of conservation efforts, and hunting helped keep them in check.Germans should "live together with the animals, in the way you are trying to tell us to", Masisi told the German newspaper Bild. The country is home to about a third of the world's elephant population — more than 130,000 — more than it has space for.Herds were causing damage to property, eating crops and trampling...

Faye: Senegal election offers hope to frustrated young Africans
DAKAR — Few political turnarounds can match the last month in Senegal.Just over two weeks ago, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was a little-known opposition leader languishing in jail, detained without trial on charges including inciting insurrection, who had never held elected office. One week ago, he defeated the governing party’s candidate, Amadou Ba, in the country’s presidential election, winning 54% in the first round. On Tuesday, the 44-year-old is set to be sworn in as the fifth president of Senegal and become Africa’s youngest elected head of state. In a region where a large majority of the population are under 30, his victory offers hope to those young people frustrated by a lack of economic opportunities, with old elites seemingly clinging to power.Faye’s spectacular rise is a...
