Six Portuguese youths take 32 countries to court over climate inaction
STRASBOURG — Six young people from Portugal will take on 32 countries in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Wednesday for failing to protect them against climate change. The historic trial is the first time so many countries will have to defend themselves in front of any court in the world. All 27 European Union member states, the UK, Turkey, Russia and Norway are among the defendants. The Portuguese youth, aged between 11 and 24, say governments’ inaction on climate change breaches their human rights and discriminates against young people.Devastating heat in Portugal is restricting their ability to sleep and exercise, harming their physical health and causing mental distress. They also say that climate anxiety is now widespread among their generation.“Without urgent action...

Ban smoking and vaping in schools worldwide urges WHO
GENEVA — Young people continue to be “relentlessly” targeted with tobacco and nicotine products, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Tuesday, in a call to ban smoking and vaping “whether sitting in class, playing games outside or waiting at the school bus stop”.According to the UN health agency, the tobacco industry’s approach has resulted in increased use of e-cigarettes, with nine out of 10 smokers starting before the age of 18 — and some as early as 11.“Considering that children spend nearly one-third of their waking hours in school, and much of the peer pressure they encounter occurs within these educational environments, schools play a pivotal role,” WHO said.Schools are in “a uniquely powerful position to play a major role in reducing the serious problem...

France moves homeless people out of Paris as city prepares for next summer’s Olympics
PARIS — It’s 6.30 a.m. on a late summer morning in Paris. Amid the rumbling coming from the Stalingrad Métro station, in the northeast of the French capital, hundreds of migrants, mostly men, sleep crammed under an overpass. Some rest on pieces of cardboard and old mattresses behind a urine-doused fence, others lie awake by the side of the street.Word is spreading that government buses are about to come and collect them. Some wait eagerly, hoping they’ll finally be offered housing, most are confused and fearful, concerned they’ll be forced to leave Paris. For the past couple of months, the French government has been working to accelerate the transfer of Paris’ homeless to other parts of the country, as part of a plan to relieve some of the pressure on the capital’s emergency...
