Bombings kill 6 civilians in Syria's main Kurdish city
QAMISHLI, Syria — Three simultaneous bombings killed at least six civilians on Monday in the northeastern Syrian city of Qamishli, the latest attack to target the de-facto capital of the country's embattled Kurdish minority. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombings, which came after Daesh (the so-called IS) said it was responsible for the killing of a priest from the city. Two car bombs and an explosives-rigged motorcycle blew up in a busy market and near a school and several churches, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.Six civilians were killed and 22 wounded in the attacks, said the war monitor group, which relies on sources inside Syria for its reports. An AFP correspondent saw charred cars and smoke rise from the site of the blasts...

Lebanon leaders try to buy time to address protests
BEIRUT — Lebanon's embattled leaders tried to buy time Monday, dodging mounting public pressure over the country's unprecedented economic and political crises.Nearly four weeks into nationwide protests calling for the ouster of the ruling elite, radical changes demanded by demonstrators have not been implemented. The peaceful protests against corruption and sectarianism have paralyzed Lebanon, worsening an economic crisis that has brought the country to the brink of default.Central bank governor Riad Salameh — increasingly under fire for his monetary policies — insisted however that deposits were safe and the country's currency would remain pegged to the dollar."The central bank's first and foremost goal is to protect the Lebanese pound's stability," he...

Turkey invasion triggers fertile vacuum for Daesh resurgence
Saudi Gazette reportJEDDAH - Amid growing concerns of a reemergence of the Daesh (so-called Islamic State) fighters in the vacuum created by the early October pullout of the US forces from northeast Syria that paved the way for a Turkish offensive against the Syrian Kurdish YPG forces who had been at the forefront of fighting against Daesh, there’s an increasing fear in Western countries that they could face a wave of returning battle-hardened Daesh fighters from Syria unless they get tough on Turkey. The way in which the US pulled out its forces and the immediate launch of the ground offensive by the Turkish forces in in northeastern Syria, leaving Kurdish forces and thousands of civilians at risk, triggered immediate chaos that could have lasting consequence. Turkey’s Operation Peace...

EU takes step closer to Turkey drilling sanctions
BRUSSELS — The EU on Monday moved a step closer to imposing sanctions over Turkey's drilling for oil and gas off , by formally adopting a legal framework to target those involved. The discovery of hydrocarbon reserves in the eastern Mediterranean has sparked a dispute between EU member Cyprus and Turkey, which occupies the north of the island. The EU has repeatedly warned Turkey to stop exploratory drilling activities in what Cyprus says are its territorial waters, to no avail, and last month EU foreign ministers asked officials to create a sanctions framework. Now the ministers meeting in Brussels have approved the framework — effectively a blank list — which is needed to impose travel bans and asset freezes on individuals and companies involved in the operations. The Council of the...

NAJAF, Iraq — The United Nations' top official in Iraq and the country's most senior cleric urged authorities on Monday to get "serious" about reforms after anti-government demonstrations that have left hundreds dead.Mass rallies calling for an overhaul of the ruling system have rocked the capital Baghdad and the Shiite-majority south since Oct. 1 — the largest and deadliest popular movement in Iraq in decades. The bloody unrest has sparked serious concern from the UN, human rights groups and the White House, which on Sunday called on Baghdad "to halt the violence against protesters" and pass electoral reform. After weeks of paralysis, Iraq's top leaders seem to have agreed to keep the system intact, but the UN in Iraq (UNAMI) urged them to enact a host of...

German foreign minister warns Iran over nuclear deal
BRUSSELS — German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned Tehran over its new uranium enrichment on Monday, threatening to trigger a dispute mechanism in the 2015 nuclear deal, which could open the way to renewed UN sanctions. The three European parties to the deal — Germany, France and Britain — will meet in Paris on Monday to discuss how to respond to Iran stepping back from its commitments under the accord, Maas said.Tehran last week resumed enrichment at the underground Fordow plant south of Tehran in the latest in a series of moves away from the agreement, taken since Washington's withdrawal in May last year and re-imposition of sanctions."We are very concerned to see that there are other uranium enrichment that Iran has not only announced, but is also carrying out,"...
