MAZDA revealed two concepts at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. The Mazda Kai concept, a compact hatchback that heralds a new generation of inspired vehicles from the award-winning Japanese carmaker, made its world premiere at the event. Also showcased, was the second appearance for the Mazda Vision Coupe, a design concept that debuted at a pre-show event called Mazda Design Night 2017. The Kai Concept features muscular, solid proportions in a form brought to life by a delicate flow of reflections over the sides of the body.

Highlights of the Vision Coupe, meanwhile, include a Kodo- Soul of Motion exterior that embodies a minimalist Japanese aesthetic, achieving a simple “one-motion” form that conveys a sense of speed. The interior applies the concept of ma (literally “space”) from traditional Japanese architecture, combining three-dimensional depth with a strong longitudinal axis to produce a relaxed space while maintaining the feeling of motion.

As for the concept’s name, it pays homage to Mazda’s tradition of design elegance represented by coupe models like the Mazda R360, Mazda’s first passenger car, and the Mazda Luce Rotary, also known as the Mazda R130.

Mazda also spotlights on the all-new Mazda CX-8, a three-row SUV going on sale in Japan later this year, as well as the 2018 Mazda MX-5 and 2018 Mazda MX-5 RF. The latter offer a number of enhancements such as a higher quality ride, more peaceful cabin and a wider choice of body colors.

Based on the RX-Vision design-wise, the Vision Coupe is unlike any other Mazda we’ve seen on the road. Not only larger than the Mazda 6, it also has a decidedly sporty attitude and a coupe-like roof that reminds of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the car that started this whole trend. And while there’s no official word on what Mazda will do with this concept, a full-size sedan is very likely in the future. With Mazda having offered such a model for only a few years in the 1980s and 1990s (remember the 929?), a full-size sedan would be a big deal for the Japanese automaker. But until we find out more about that, let’s take a closer look at Mazda’s most exciting sedan yet.

The new Kai Concept is a really good-looking car but the Vision Concept is another step up from there. It is an elegant four-door saloon car with very few seams or lines across the body which gives the car an incredibly aesthetically-pleasing design.

Mazda said the design “embodies a minimalist Japanese aesthetic, achieving a simple ‘one-motion’ form that conveys a sense of speed.”

Inside the car the company has used the concept of ‘ma’ from Japanese architecture which means ‘space.’

Apart from some flowery language about the car’s design, there is not much else that has been confirmed for the car. — SG/Agencies
