NEW YORK – The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has submitted a memorandum of protest to the United Nations against repeated infringements and violations by Iranian boats and vessels in restricted areas of the oil fields and platforms, located in the territorial waters of the Kingdom.

The territorial waters in the Arabian Gulf are based on the maritime boundary line that was set up following an agreement between the two countries on Oct. 2. The Kingdom called on the Iranian government to refrain from such actions, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported Tuesday night.

Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Bin Yahya Al-Muallimi, said that despite the protest notes addressed to the Iranian government and to the UN Secretary-General, Iran has increasingly repeated the violations and abuses.

Iran has violated the accord by sending boats and vessels — in the Kingdom's waters and restricted areas of oil rights announced as its coordinates and explained on the global navigational maps — into the territorial sea of the Kingdom and its exclusive economic zone in the Arabian Gulf.

He stated that as a result of these repeated violations of Iranian boats and vessels, including what happened on Nov. 17, 2016, June 16, 2016, Oct. 27, 2017, and on Dec. 21, 2017, the competent authorities in the Kingdom have taken necessary measures against such violations and breaches, in accordance with the regulations in force.

Ambassador Al-Muallimi stressed that the Saudi government holds the Iranian government fully responsible for any damage that may arise as a result of these violations and abuses.

Ambassador Al-Muallimi, while thanking the secretary general, requested him to circulate this memorandum to all member states, as a United Nations document, as well as to publish it in the next edition of the Law of the Sea Journal.

Meanwhile, the Kingdom has confirmed that the recruitment of children by Iranian-backed Houthi militias in Yemen and involving them in battlefields are a blatant disregard of international laws and humanitarian norms, while calling on the UN Security Council to condemn these actions and those who support these militias that seek to promote their sectarian agenda.

This came in the Kingdom's address at the Security Council on the open debate on "Children and Armed Conflict", delivered by Al-Muallimi. — SPA
