JEDDAH — Hyflux has won a $48 million  contract to build a desalination system for Saudi Arabia.

The containerized desalination system, which will be among the largest of its kind, will be placed with the existing Yanbu Desalination Plant on the Red Sea coast 350km north of Jeddah.

It will boost the current plant's capacity to supply water to the industrial city of Yanbu and the nearby Madinah region.

The new desalination plant comprises 10 modular containerized units which are compact and flexible, making them easy to deploy and install.

The 10 units, each with a capacity of 3,000 cubic meters a day, will use Hyflux's proprietary Kristal ultrafiltration membrane technology for the pre-treatment phase of the seawater osmosis desalination process.

"We are honored to be given this opportunity to work with SWCC (state-owned Saline Water Conversion Corporation)," said Olivia Lum, Hyflux executive chairman and group chief executive.

"This project is a great example of Hyflux's ability to provide quick, cost-effective solutions for our customers," added Lum.

The project is set to be completed in about eight months and is expected to contribute to the firm's results for the current financial year. — SG
