Hussein Shobokshi Saudi Arabia is officially done with the three days of customary mourning period after the passing of its beloved former petroleum minister and ambassador Hisham Nazer. He was buried in front of a huge number of people, and the turnout from family and friends expressing their sorrow and deep grief was large. Now it’s time to preserve the legacy of a great man. I believe it is truly a golden moment and a special opportunity for the various international places and associations that were part of his life to play a role, a practical role at that, to recognize his legacy. Egypt, the country where he attended school and excelled and where he held his last official duty as an ambassador of his country, should name an important street after him to honor his role in enhancing the relationship between both countries, as well as the many great memories and friends he left there to be cherished and respected. The University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), where he attended university and excelled while keeping a very special relationship with the esteemed institution throughout his life, should be encouraged to come out with a chair or a program in his name in the field of international diplomacy or petroleum studies — the two areas of his intent and specialization. This would make perfect sense as it will preserve his legacy and highlight the role which UCLA played in his life. OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) should come up with an initiative such as sponsoring an award or a prize in his name that will be granted for the best research or energy institution, as Nazer was following such matters with great interest. ARAMCO, the world’s largest oil company, which he chaired, should also participate by naming a main hall in his name. These are many ways of recognizing his great legacy and it should be recognized. Hisham Nazer was a Saudi figure by naturalization but he was a global leader by all means.
