ResizeNEW YORK — Justin Abdelkader and Danny DeKeyser scored 71 seconds apart in the second period as the Detroit Red Wings went into the All Star break with a 4-2 win over the New York Islanders at Barclays Center.
Despite the announced attendance of 12,086, there were plenty of empty seats two days after winter storm Jonas dropped as much as 30 inches of snow on metropolitan New York and forced the postponement of the Islanders’ game on Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Red Wings moved within three points of division leader Florida; the same margin that separates the top teams in the Central Division after Dallas defeated Calgary to close in on idle Chicago.
Detroit’s Brad Richards scored in the first period and Luke Glendenning added an empty-netter in the final minute to seal Detroit’s win against a team that had posed problems in recent history. The Red Wings had won only two of their previous ten against the Islanders. Brock Nelson and Mikhail Grabovski scored for New York.
Blue Jackets 5, Canadiens 2: Cam Atkinson scored three goals and Brandon Saad had two as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 at Nationwide Arena.
Saad scored the go-ahead goal at 9:06 of the third period and added an empty-netter at 18:48. Atkinson capped the scoring with a goal in the final minute for the hat trick.
Bruins 3, Flyers 2: The Boston Bruins survived a Philadelphia Flyers comeback to win 3-2 at Wells Fargo Center.
After twice blowing third-period leads for a pair of losses to Philadelphia this season, Boston coughed up another advantage but escaped with the win when Brett Connolly deflected a shot into the net with 1:54 left for the game-winner.
Rangers 6, Sabres 3: A day after a dreadful performance that left their coach flabbergasted, Derick Brassard had five points and the New York Rangers responded by defeating the Buffalo Sabres 6-3 at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers delivered one of their worst performances of the season on Sunday in a 3-0 road loss to the Ottawa Senators but did enough to beat a well rested Sabres team that had not played since Friday.
Stars 2, Flames 1: Dallas center Jason Spezza scored the game-winning goal and goaltender Antti Niemi stopped 23 of 24 shots as the Stars defeated the Calgary Flames 2-1 at American Airlines Center.
Spezza netted the eventual winner 4:03 into the second period and 1:20 after Stars captain Jamie Benn broke a scoreless tie. Spezza scored his 17th goal of the season on a tap-in at the far post.
Coyotes 2, Wild 1 (SO): Anthony Duclair scored the only goal in a shootout as the Arizona Coyotes won their second game in a row, beating the slumping Minnesota Wild 2-1.
Goaltender Louis Domingue, making his 15th start in the last 17 games for Arizona (24-19-5), had 34 saves and kept the Wild winless at home in January. Minnesota (23-17-9) last won a home game on Dec. 28 and head into the All Star break on a 1-6-1 run.
