LOS ANGELES — Jeff Carter scored twice in the third period to get his 300th career goal after Drew Doughty and Anze Kopitar scored less than 2 minutes apart in the second period to lift the Los Angeles Kings over the Vancouver Canucks 5-1 Monday night. Carter and Vincent Lecavalier scored 39 seconds apart midway through the third, and then Carter added an empty-netter for his 300th. Jonathan Quick made 21 saves to help the Kings climb within a point of Pacific Division-leading Anaheim, which lost 2-1 to Washington in a shootout. The Kings led the Ducks by 16 points on Jan. 20 but fell out of first place with a 3-2 loss to the Ducks Saturday. Defenseman Dan Hamhuis scored for Vancouver and Ryan Miller stopped 24 shots. Capitals 2, Ducks 1 (SO): T.J. Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom scored in a shootout to give the Washington Capitals a 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks in front of a sellout crowd of 17,174 at the Honda Center. Washington goalie Braden Holtby grabbed two shots during the shutout and finished with 27 saves. Andre Burakovsky scored in regulation for the Capitals (49-13-4), who earned their third victory in four games. Flyers 4, Lightning 2: Shayne Gostisbehere made more franchise history and the Philadelphia Flyers snapped the Tampa Bay Lightning’s nine-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory at Wells Fargo Center. Gostisbehere scored two markers to give him 14, breaking Behn Wilson’s record for most goals in a season by a Philadelphia rookie defenseman set in 1978-79, when he recorded 13. Earlier in the season, Gostisbehere set the point-streak record by a Flyers rookie at 15 games. Sabres 4, Maple Leafs 3 (SO): Sam Reinhart scored the shootout winner as the Buffalo Sabres edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 at Air Canada Centre. Buffalo has won both meetings between the two clubs this season. Mark Pysyk, Jack Eichel and Evander Kane had the other Buffalo goals while Chad Johnson made 30 saves to improve to 3-0-1 all-time against the Leafs. Bruins 5, Panthers 4 (OT): Lee Stempniak scored with one minute left in overtime as the Boston Bruins earned a wild 5-4 win over the Florida Panthers at the BB&T Center. The Bruins, who also got two goals from Patrice Bergeron, blew a 4-1 lead before getting the game-winner on Stempniak’s 17th score of the season. Sharks 2, Flames 1 (OT): Joe Pavelski scored 19 seconds into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Brent Burns set up the goal and also scored his 24th of the season early in the first period to help the Sharks (36-23-6) bounce back from a 4-2 home loss to the Vancouver Canucks Saturday. Avalanche 3, Coyotes 1: Matt Duchene had a goal and an assist, Semyon Varlamov made 37 saves in his return to the net, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-1. Mikhail Grigorenko also had a goal and an assist and Shawn Matthias scored for Colorado, which got a valuable two points against a struggling team. — Agencies
