Fatima Al-Bakili WE have a rich religious, cultural and historical heritage in our country. Our religion denounces all forms of fanaticism and racism. Treating someone according to his tribal affiliations, economic status and social position does not exist in Islam. We have of late seen actions that are full of fanaticism and racism, especially on social media. I am sure there are outside players behind these activities; individuals who want to spread hatred among citizens. We must find a way to fight those haters or else our social fabric and harmony will be at stake. Why are our scholars not saying anything about what is going on especially with regard to social media? Some fanatics have exceeded the limits of what is socially acceptable. The problem is that some TV channels fuel fanaticism by airing certain programs that talk about taking pride in one’s tribe. These shows make members of a certain tribe put the interests of their tribe before the interests of society and our country. There is nothing wrong with being loyal to one’s tribe, but to take such loyalty to the extreme and to disrespect other people is not acceptable. I do not watch soccer because I do not enjoy it and never will. However, when I look at the sports scene, I see racism and fanaticism everywhere. I remember a sports show in which a hardcore fan used improper language and shouted at another guest who was much older than him. If you want to support your favorite soccer team, then go ahead and do it but without turning into a fanatic. Fanaticism begets hatred and division among people. If we leave this problem unresolved, things will continue and fanaticism will pass down from one generation to another.
