NEW YORK — Russell Martin’s two-out, two run single in the eighth inning capped a four-run inning for Toronto en route to a 4-3 victory over Boston. Martin’s decisive hit came off Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel, who entered in relief of a shaky Koji Uehara in a 1-1 game with one out in the eighth and struck out Edwin Encarnacion, but allowed a bases-loaded walk to Troy Tulowitzki. Michael Saunders drove in the tying run on his groundout earlier in the inning. Mets 5, Phillies 2: Noah Syndergaard pitched seven strong innings, and David Wright homered twice as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2. Lucas Duda and Neil Walker hit back-to-back homers for New York, which won for the fourth time in five games. Duda also drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning double. Syndergaard (2-0) allowed one run and five hits while striking out eight and walking two. Rockies 5, Reds 1: Trevor Story hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth and Ben Paulsen added a three-run blast later in the inning, lifting Colorado past Cincinnati. Rockies right-hander Jordan Lyles (1-1) allowed an unearned run and four hits through seven innings after struggling in his first two starts. Marlins 6, Nationals 1: After five consecutive home losses, Miami finally earned its first home victory of the season. Jose Fernandez improved his career home record to 18-1, allowing three hits, four walks and one run while striking out nine in six innings. Cubs 5, Cardinals 0: John Lackey made himself right at home in the ballpark where he pitched so well last year. In his first start against the St. Louis Cardinals, Lackey fired seven shutout innings and struck out 11 Monday night as the Chicago Cubs busted open a pitcher’s duel in the last four innings for a 5-0 win at sold-out Busch Stadium. Angels 7, White Sox 0: The Los Angeles Angels scored five first-inning runs and Hector Santiago matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts and allowed only two hits over seven innings in a 7-0 win over the Chicago White Sox at US Cellular Field. Santiago’s first win of the season helped the Angels (6-7) snap a three-game losing streak. The White Sox (8-5), who won eight of their first 10 games, have now dropped three straight. Twins 7, Brewers 4 (6 innings): In a rain-shortened game Monday at Target Field, the Minnesota Twins defeated the visiting Milwaukee Brewers by a 7-4 final in six innings. The game was delayed at the end of the sixth inning, with the Twins leading by three. After a delay of two hours and six minutes, umpires declared Monday’s game final. It is the first rain-shortened game in the seven-year history of Target Field. Diamondbacks 9, Giants 7 (11 innings): Jean Segura’s infield single plated Phil Gosselin with the go-ahead run in the 11th inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks fought back from three deficits to beat the San Francisco Giants 9-7. Jake Lamb tied the game in the ninth inning with a two-out, two-strike home run that just cleared the right field barrier. He added an RBI double in the 11th.
