LOS ANGELES — Josef Newgarden, showing no sign of the injuries suffered in a crash last month, dominated the IndyCar Iowa Corn 300 Sunday to move to second in the series standings.
Newgarden suffered a broken collarbone and wrist in a crash at Texas Motor Speedway in June.
But his fears that his injured right wrist might hinder him on the short oval in Newton, Iowa, proved unfounded as he led an IndyCar record 282 laps.
After finishing second in Iowa in each of the past two years, he won by a margin of 4.28 seconds. At one point he had lapped every driver but one en route to his first victory on an oval circuit.
“This was the best car I’ve ever had,” Newgarden said. “My right hand was killing me, but having a good car made it feel better.”
The victory was Newgarden’s first this season and third overall. His last win came last year at the Toronto street race, where the IndyCar Series will be next weekend.
The win vaulted him to second in the standings, 73 points behind series leader Simon Pagenaud of France.
Australia Will Power made a strong move in the closing laps to finish second in his Penske ahead of New Zealand’s Scott Dixon. Pagenaud, who started from pole, finished fourth. — AFP
