BERLIN — Bayern Munich's perfect Bundesliga start came to a screeching halt when it drew 1-1 with visiting Cologne Saturday after winning its first five matches of the season.
The Bavarians, who lost to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in midweek, hit the woodwork three times and controlled the game but failed to make their dominance count, with Cologne protecting their undefeated run this season.
Their three-point lead at the top could be reduced with third-placed Borussia Dortmund, four points behind, travelling to Bayer Leverkusen later Saturday.
"We have not been good in two games but I am confident," Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti told reporters. "We started the game well, dominated but in the second half Cologne improved."
"We could have won that game but Cologne also had chances to win it. We can be disappointed but we should not be worried."
The host struggled against the hard-working Cologne defenders for 40 minute before Joshua Kimmich finally broke the deadlock, diving to head in a beautiful Juan Bernat cross for the lead.
Thomas Mueller came close to adding another four minutes after the restart as did Robert Lewandowski, with Bayern keeping up the pressure and looking to kill off the game.
But it was Cologne which scored when striker Anthony Modeste timed his run to perfection, taking off inside the box to volley a cross into the back of Manuel Neuer's net for his fifth goal of the campaign.
The host was left stunned for a few minutes with Cologne trying to hit it again on the counter-attack and Yuya Osako's effort was ruled out for off-side.
Cologne keeper Timo Horn made the save of the day when he punched a point-blank Mueller volley on to the crossbar and the Bavarians also hit the woodwork with a powerful low drive by Bernat five minutes from time.
The last big chance fell to the visitors, however, with Simon Zoller coming agonizingly close to a stoppage-time winner as his shot rolled just wide of the post.
Bayern moved up to 16 points, with Hertha Berlin second on 13, after easing past Hamburg SV 2-0 with two goals from Vedad Ibisevic, who became a father Friday night.
Hamburg, under new coach Markus Gisdol, has yet to win this season and is in 17th place on just one point.
Freiburg edged past Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 to maintain its perfect home record this season and climb to ninth spot. In other matches, Hoffenheim won at Ingolstadt 2-0 and Werder Bremen drew at Darmstadt 2-2. Cavani hits a brace Edinson Cavani scored a double for the second game running to fire Paris St Germain to a 2-0 win over Bordeaux Saturday as the Ligue 1 champions reasserted their title bid after a stuttering start.
Unai Emery's side put the memory of last week's surprise 2-0 defeat at Toulouse firmly behind them by racing into an early lead when Cavani rose to head home Angel di Maria's cross in the third minute.
The Uruguayan doubled the lead on the half-hour mark by helping Layvin Kurzawa's pass into the net with a clever flick of the heel, grabbing his eighth league goal of the season and adding to his double in Wednesday's 3-1 win at Ludogorets in the Champions League.
Cavani became the top scorer in Ligue 1, moving two goals clear of Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette and Metz's Mevluet Erdinc.
