ResizeJEDDAH — The official spokesman of the General Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Protection, Hussein Al-Qahtani, said an investigation is under way to find out why large numbers of dead sardines have washed up on the shores of Jeddah. The sight attracted a large number of beach goers who took clips and circulated them on social media. Al-Qahtani said the reason may be the closing of a canal that circulated water for a bridge construction. This could have possibly reduced the level of oxygen in the water, causing the fish to die. Professor of Environment Studies at King Abdulaziz University Ali Eshqi said the problem may be due to the dumping of sewage into the sea, poisoning marine life.
