ResizeSINGAPORE — Angelique Kerber continued her relentless march toward a maiden WTA Finals crown with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-1 victory over defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska Saturday to set up a title showdown against Dominika Cibulkova.
The German enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with victories at the Australian and US Opens to usurp Serena Williams at the top of the world rankings and after another dominant display, she will be favored to cap her season with the Singapore title Sunday.
“I was trying to be focused on every single point because playing against her is so tough, so I just made sure I played my game and was aggressive,” Kerber said. “It’s amazing to think that I will be in the final in Singapore.”
In the first semifinal, Cibulkova continued her dream debut at the elite eight-woman event with a thrilling 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in an absorbing encounter.
“This is my first time here and it’s one of my dreams come true, just incredible,” world No. 8 Cibulkova said.
The final is a rematch of their opening round-robin match last Sunday in which Kerber beat the Slovakian 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-3, the only contest of the week when the German lost a set.
Zverev stuns Wawrinka
Top seed and US Open champion Stan Wawrinka slumped to a shock 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 defeat to German qualifier Mischa Zverev Friday, limping out of the Swiss Indoors event in the quarterfinals.
Zverev, 29, and ranked 72 in the world, will now face Croatian fourth seed Marin Cilic, who beat Spain’s Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-3, for a place in the final.
Wawrinka has a poor history at the Swiss tournament played in Roger Federer’s hometown, despite playing the event for 13 of the last 14 years.
Two-time champion Juan Martin del Potro hit 14 aces but still went down to a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Kei Nishikori.
Nishikori will Saturday play to reach his second Basel final — he lost the 2011 title match to Federer — when he takes on Gilles Muller, a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) winner over Argentine Federico Delbonis.
Murray to face Tsonga in final
Andy Murray was given a helping hand in his bid to snatch the world No. 1 spot when Spanish veteran David Ferrer withdrew from their Vienna semifinal Saturday with a leg injury.
Wimbledon and Olympic champion Murray will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday's final after the Frenchman saved a match point in a grueling 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6) victory over Ivo Karlovic.
Murray, the 2014 Vienna title winner, can snatch Novak Djokovic's world No. 1 ranking if he wins Sunday's final as well as next week's Paris Masters.
In the quarterfinals, Murray defeated injured John Isner 6-1, 6-3, Ferrer recovered from a break down to beat Serbia’s Viktor Troicki 6-3, 3-6, 7-5,
Karlovic saved a match point and fired 29 aces to defeat Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 and Tsonga defeated Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2, 7-6 (7/5). — Agencies
