WASHINGTON — Nicklas Backstrom had two goals and three assists, T.J. Oshie added two goals and two assists, and the Washington Capitals routed the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-1 Wednesday night at Verizon Center. Braden Holtby made 25 saves and Justin Williams, Dmitry Orlov and Alex Ovechkin also scored for Washington (10-4-2), which had lost three of its last four. Oshie has five goals in his last seven games and the four points tied his career high. With his eighth goal of the season to close out the scoring, Ovechkin picked up his first point in five games. Pittsburgh averted the shutout when Phil Kessel scored with 3:32 left. Penguins starting goalie Matthew Murray stopped 12 of 14 shots before leaving the game late in the first period after getting hit in the face with a stick. Marc-Andre Fleury relieved Murray and made 20 saves. Murray had won 11 straight regular season games going back to last season. Flames 2, Coyotes 1 Michael Frolik scored 49 seconds into overtime to lead Calgary over Arizona at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Frolik snapped a perfect shot to the top corner behind Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, helping the Flames to their second win in as many nights. Matthew Tkachuk also scored for the Flames, who trailed 1-0 after two periods. Stamkos out indefinitely Tampa Bay Lightning top scorer and captain Steven Stamkos faces an injury layoff after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee against the Detroit Red Wings, the team confirmed Wednesday. Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said the NHL team is not putting a timeline on his return because they are evaluating different treatment options. “Our understanding is that this issue can be repaired and he can get back to full speed,” Yzerman said. “It just takes some time.” Canada’s Stamkos did not travel with the team to Buffalo for Thursday’s game against the Sabres and has returned to Tampa for treatment. Stamkos appeared to injure his right leg in a collision with Detroit’s Gustav Nyquist along the boards. “You never want to lose a guy, but especially when he’s one of the best players in the world,” Tampa Bay defenceman Victor Hedman said. “Hopefully, this isn’t anything serious.” Stamkos’ stellar career has been dotted with injuries. He suffered a broken leg during the 2013-14 season. He underwent surgery for a blood clot on his right collar bone this past April, which forced him to miss the last few regular-season games of last season and all but one of Tampa Bay’s final Stanley Cup playoff game.
